Photo Real Grass??

#1

I’m trying to create some golf course holes in Vue 6. Seems like the perfect program to do that in but the one big problem I’m having is with grass. If I push the density level of the grass anywhere near where I’d need it for the rendering to look good, my mem gets maxed out every time. I’d settle for a simple texture with a bump map, but I’m hoping to have several shots of the holes from up close. As well as maybe do a fly through that would skim the top of the grass showing off some close up details of the course. Has anyone else run into any issues trying to make photo real grass on a large scale? Any advice or just ideas would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!

There are some great materials (TerraPak) and plants (Incredibly Lush Grassy Places) available at Cornucopia. http://www.cornucopia3d.com

If you have Infinite/xStream, try painting the grass only where needed rather than using an ecosystem applied to the whole terrain.

I’ve done a golf course in Vue5I 2years ago with the default patch of grass ( was the only grass available back then), and of course, only populated around the camera’s fov, you can’t populate acres of golf course unless you have a 64bit system with 16 gigs of ram, or something like this.

Still, it amounted to around 1 billion polys on my scene on a low specs machine, ( P4 with 1gig of ram using a 6800GT Nvidia agp 4x) and Vue handled the scene very nicely.

THANKS, I guess thats what I should have been doing from the start. The fact that Vue can handle over 1 billion polys is pretty amazing in and of itself though. I suppose I was trying to make a setup that a pc 3 yrs from now may be able to run. Thanks mwalter1 for the link! I’ll probably use one of the grassy materials they have on their site to cover the course as a whole and then just populate the fov of the camera like bruno021 did. Looks like another night fumbling around in vue trying to figure out what im doing. THANKS FOR THE HELP! Bruno you wouldn’t happen to have some shots from the course you did? I’d love to see what it looked like.

Sorry, haven’t found the renders on my machine. Will check backup dvds.
