phantom geometry

Hi

I posted this once before but for some reason, I cannot see it. So I’m posting it again because by now I am DESPERATE.

Please can someone help. I created a book with turning pages in Maya 2014. The pages turn using a combination of blend shapes and vertex animation. They render just fine in software (and playblast fine) but whenever I do a mental ray render (which I need to do) I’m getting a ghost page in my renders. I have tried absolutely everything I can think of. Please let me know if you know why this is happening and how I can solve it.

What it should look like:

What I’m getting when I render:

Provide more detailed about your approach.
Renderstats Primary Visibility … object visible channel? etc
It seems to be related to shadow casting but I need more information.

for quick troubleshooting you could try to export the whole thing as alembic as it looks like mr has a problem with your vertex animation in combination with your deformer/s (?). More info on how you rigged the pages would be useful here -> do you have multiple shapes (intermediate or not) on your pages transform node?

I had something a bit similar a few years ago and I found un-ticking “optimise animation detection” in the render settings> options tab >translation fixed it…
Worth a try.

Could it be a blend shape that’s not visible in the viewport but visible to primary rays? Or transparency level not high enough?
