Pen tool

#1

Forgive me I just got modo yesterday, anyways I love to point model like all decent freedom loving peopl of the world ya know? And I just love how easy it is to start the first poly just click click click, t hen I figured out that shift makes another poly but that poly is INDEPENDANT. how in gods name do I build a mesh unconnected polys!! ahh this is driving me maddd. I hope the boxed version or whatever gets here soon.

:-/ no one knows?

JIII,

Welcome to MODO!

I think no one has answered becuase the question reads a bit confusing, maybe as im a bit confused about the workflow.

Ok, so you made some poly’s via the pen tool, they are separate from each other with no connections right?

You want to bridge them together with the bridge tool, maybe… via selecting the edges where you want to connect both polys.

or Make some more verts, select them and click on make in the poly tab.

or You can select the verts, and Join them with the join tool(avereged) in vetex tab.

Hope that was what you were looking for?

I think I understand what you are asking. In Maya there is an append Poly tool. Modo dose not have this (I wish it did), but just the same, use the pen tool to creat your first poly. Then select an Edge and Extend it. Now you have two conected polys. This will also work across multipule edges, so you can start building whloe patches of mesh very fast. The pen tool is kind of limited for what you are trying to do. But there are plenty of other tool that will get you what you want. The hardest thing about learning new software is lerning to think the way the software works.

I think u select it in the options : Polygon; Lines: Vertices

choose vertices. that should not connect them.

I’d like to ask if someone knows how to extrude along a spline path (like in max) or an edge boundary around some polygons or alternatively if its possible to do extend edges along the normals of the vertices so that edge expands away from its vertex normal for each edge and not go in one direction also with no break up between edges. Scale tool doesnt do this as properly even even coupled with local selection.

I not sure but maybe this is the solution.

I actaully come from a cinema 4D background and in Cinema you say add vertexes or points and then use the bridge tool to connect them That way you can point model accurately the first few parts of your mesh eyes/mouth etc. Then I will go into edges and start expanding faster. Now the pen tool appears to give me those verts or t hat first starting poly but I wish there was an easier way to just like hit shift and then start the second poly without having to bridge the two together like that.

Blah I know I used the bridge word twice but both apps have a slightly different meaning for the tool.

Okayy Now I have things figured out pretty well  now if only I can get the interface to do what i want.

Check out Dion’s head modeling tutorial,
an excellent resource, if you haven’t
already.
