What’s the difference between a $40 Wacom Graphire and a $400 Intuos tablet?
And, does anyone know if a Pen Mouse would be any good in place of a tablet? I don’t have the moolah right now for a nice tablet.

well the graphire is a low cost and low spec tablet, there is another low spec pad from wacom the Voltio, much cheaper than the Graphire.
The Graphire has less presure levels and resolution than the Intuos, and no pen tilt function.
You can buy different pens for the intuos and the Intuos comes with different kind of tips.
You also have a couple of Buttons and TouchStripes on the pad.
The latest Graphire 4 has two buttons and a scroll wheel (with bad placement IMHO).
Hmmm those " Pen Mouse" Devices are never that good like a Pad!
A graphire is a good pad to start with but if you can afford a Intuos A5 (or A4) go for an Intuos!
You also could check ebay (or other) for used tablets.
Wacom Pad have a long lifetime, i have a ten year old Pad at home and it works like on the first day!
Short, Wacoms are woth thier money
Hope i could help a little.
Yes, thanks. I understand, and will look into a tablet (probably used).
I do wonder though if anyone has used a pen-mouse yet, and if you could tell me what they are like to use. Anybody? I know they are not very popular yet.
I have a penmouse. I have it to replace the mouse sometimes, never the pen. I never use it for 2D or 3D work. I find i moves very slightly when you click. It can be a little difficult to double click. I think it’s better suited for a person who moves his/her arm and hand smoothly and a little slower. I move my arm and hand quite fast and in a jerky way so it makes it a little difficult for me to use it.
It’s a change from using the mouse though.
