Patterned surface Texture in Maya

Hi all,

Im fairly new to Maya but fluent in Alias. I need a pattern textured surface like the images shown below. Is there a way to model this instead of using a normal map? Im having trouble envisioning even what a normal map would look like to get this effect.

if your uvs are following the surface this would work fine with a tileable texture…

Anyway. You can do this in MASH. Modelling your exagon and distribute with MASH, after that, you can create a plane matching your entire exagon instanced Add a wrap controlling your exagonized model and ShrinkWrap the plane(controlling the exagonized) to your preferred model.
