Painting rough seas in Photoshop.

#1

Does anyone know of a good reference site or basic tutorial for painting a rough seas setting for Photoshop? I’ve looked online and there are very few images online of such a scene (Very few people would risk their life for a nice rough seas pic, I guess :stuck_out_tongue: ). Plus I was looking for good shots of the collision of water against a boat.

Thanks in advance! :wavey:

Try capturing still frames from DVD movies about natural disasters.

This is an old painting of mine done on a similar theme:

My top tips for painting waves: work very big, block in just the main shapes with big brushes and to create the texture use chaotic jittery brushes for randomness - avoid any repetition of shapes and patterns.

Look at reference by all means, but for something this complex you cannot really follow reference too closely - so interpret and simplify what you see, create your own version of it by understanding the underlying structure.

Here’s a close up:

frog - I absolutely love the atmosphere and the perspective, the depth and the epic storytelling in this pic! Is there a highres somewhere?

You could also try Psunami. It’s a great plugin for Adobe After Effects. It creates great images and movies involving any kind of water. You can use it to create a base layer for your Photoshop image and go from there. Hope this helps.
