painting mass crowd tips

hi
im currently working on a 2d painting for the monthly challenge over at www.epilogue.net. the theme is bloodsport arena. is there any tips or techniques on painting big crowds of people(hundreds or maybe 1000s) within an arena or stadium or is it just a matter or patience any help would be great

Based on how the podrace crowds in Episode I were made by filming colored Q-tips, I’d say don’t pay attention to the individual’s detail (nose, eyes, hair etc), just get the basic shapes in place (typically just the heads), and “light” them evenly.

Maybe put some extra detail on the front rows.
