Painting a piece of jewelery in 2d

#1

Hi,

Not sure exactly if this goes here, but I was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to paint stuff like faceted gems and jewelery in photoshop. I have this sketch here that I did for one of those 45 min challenges, and I wouldn’t mind if I could keep going with it:

Anything you coould suggest, but particularly about the jeweled parts, would be very helpful.

Have you tried looking at references? That always helps.

Also think about the fact that the facet that is at an angle where the light source is is directly reflected back to your eyes will be very bright–the same brightness as the light source, and then depending on the angle of the other facets, the value of each facet will differ according to how much light it’s receiving, and at what angle is it from your eyes/light source. Gemstones also allow light inside as well, so that’s another factor to consider.

Study one in real life and look at it from different angles and in different lighting situations–it’ll be the most helpful in understanding the stuff I mentioned above.
