Painter X Brush creator crash

#1

This just started happening a few days ago. Whenever I open the brush creator, I get an “insufficient memory” error and then Painter crashes. Even when I first open the app without loading an image, it still gives a memory error. Any ideas how to fix?

These are probably related since they started around the same time, but when opening X, before the start up menu appears I’ll get 1-2 xml errors for “illegal” or “garbage” brush profiles. I haven’t used the brush creator in quite awhile, and haven’t made any changes to brushes in the creator before the profile errors showed up, so I’m not sure what’s going on with that.

Everything else in X seems unaffected and I currently have an image with almost 15 layers open. So the memory error confuses me as switching between several projects with multiple layers doesn’t cause any probs with the app.

Thanks for any help. =)

Hi,

Sometimes I get XML errors and have found that if I open the Tracker palette (Window > Show Tracker), then choose Clear All from the Tracker palette menu to remove all brush variants listed, it solves the problem. This does not delete the actual brush variants.

Also, skip the Brush Creator entirely and instead use the Brush Controls palettes.

Window > Brush Controls > Show General will open all of the Brush Controls palettes in a docked group, right there on your normal Painter interface. This means when you want to make brush control adjustments, the palettes are available for on-the-fly changes.

In addition, you’ll never be separated from your work by being forced to go to a different Painter interface where many of the features we need are not present.

Besides, I find the Brush Creator to be a resource hog and often it doesn’t behave as it should.

I had that problem too. Program would stall and crash trying to open the Brush Creator (where it was fine before) and the only thing that fixed it was to reset the program to default by holding down the shift key when it was starting up.

Remember before doing a reset to save all your brush variants and palettes and layouts/profile somewhere first because it will delete them! On a PC their found in Documents and Settings/Default User(or users name)/Application Data/Corel/Painter X/(default or profile name)

I now usually do as Jinny suggests and just have the controls in a docked group, which is faster anyway.

Thank you! The brush control palettes are way easier/faster to use than the creator.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to help. You rock =)
