Paintbrushes won't work suddenly?

Hey I need a bit of help. I was drawing a picture and accidently bumped a few buttons which triggered some form of shortcut. Now my brushes won’t paint anywhere where there doesn’t already exist color. I’ve looked through all the settings for the brushes and layers but everything seems ok but I still can’t draw on a new empty layer or even finish off the uncolored parts of my currents layers. Does anyone know how to fix this? This project needs to be completed soon but I don’t know how to solve this problem.

Look in your Layers Palette. Check that the box next to the ‘Preserve Transparency’ option is unticked. If you are using Painter X and that box is unticked, then tick and untick it again (there’s a bug in X where the box is selected but the tick doesn’t show, ticking and unticking fixes it).

‘Preserve Transparency’ basically does what you are experiencing, where you can only affect already painted areas.
