Most of what your seeing there is the style that the characters where modeled; the proportions of the head, body, limbs, eyes. Very Stylized and cartoony looking characters which is where you will want to start.

Once your characters are modeled in a similiar style, a lot can be achieved with hand painting your texture maps. Using a tablet and Photoshop you can achieve a very non-photoreal look. Use photo reference only as a base and be sure to repaint everything by hand.

A silhouette or ink line could add to the cartoony feel of the models when rendered out. This is acomplished various ways and is available in nearly every 3D package. The catch here is maintaing consistent line quality from frame to frame. The smoothness of your model greatly effects this as well as how clean your topology is… modeling for cartoon look is very important.

First, here’s a link to the Get Ed site, in case the above link doesn’t work.

Now, addressing the character rendering style in “Get Ed”… it’s not toon-shaded. An example of toon-shaded animation would be another Jetix property, Dragon Booster.

Get Ed is shaded using a very simplified approach to modeling and shading. The forms are basic, and the textures “cartoon-ish” in nature, but it is attempting to create a cartoonish 3D appearance, rather than emulate a 2D cartoon. It’s more like painted clay than painted cels.

To achieve this effect, model your characters using as much detail as necessary then, when texturing, avoid creating “hyper-real” textures using bump maps, specularity, etc. Keep it basic and simple. Rather than a porous, realistic skin texture, use a flat color. Instead of realistic hair, use basic shapes with simple textures. Make sure your shaders are all set to basic, “flat” settings, and you should get close to the effect you’re looking for.

Hope this helps.
