OT: Intuos 3 or 4?

I’m looking for some feedback on a tablet for use with Mudbox. I’m currently using a Wacom CTE-440 (Graphire I think) and I pretty much hate it. The main reason is that the pen is pretty much a straight barrel with the buttons counter-sunk into it and it’s very difficult to find them when you need them. It also is very easy for the pen to get turned around so that the buttons are on the bottom and I have to stop and turn it back around when I need to push them.

Anyway, I was going to get an intuos4, but I’ve seen some complaints about the tips wearing very fast and I really don’t think I need the extra features it has over the intuos3 (and it’s about $60 cheaper for the small), so I’m wondering if anyone has used both and can give some constructive feedback on which they think is best for Mudbox.

BTW, is it possible to move the brush menus to the side of the screen in Mudbox? Being at the bottom makes it a bit awkward to swith brushes. Moving to the side of the screen just feels more natural.

If cost is a concern, and you are prepared to buy a new tablet if the following doesn’t work for you, then I would recommend preforming simple modifications to the pen you currently have. You might be surprised how much you can accomplish with a bottle of crazy glue, an exacto-knife and some spare plastic/rubber bits that you can salvage from household garbage. With that said, the Intuos 3 is a very nice tablet, I have one, however I wish it didn’t have any buttons/touch-strips on the tablet itself as I never use them, they take up desk space and one of my touch-strips eventually became defective and has to be disabled in software. Otherwise, it’s a great tablet, and the pen nibs last a long time.

i have an Intuos4 medium, and my brother has an Intuos3 medium so i’ve also used both. with heavy use the Intuos4 nibs last about 3-4 weeks each due to the Intuos4’s more abrasive surface. the Intuos4 feels very realistic, but if you can’t afford to keep buying $2 nibs you may want to go with the Intuos3 which has a smoother surface. if you carry your tablet with you a lot the Intuos4 may be for you because it has a detachable coard. the addition of the customizable LED button labels on the Intuos4 medium and higher are a major plus as far as i’m concerned because i use multiple apps in my workflow and remembering 8 keys across a bunch of different apps gets old.

as you can probably tell, i favor the Intuos4 over the Intuos3. if money is tight though you should probably get the Intuos3, and either one is going to be a big improvement over a Graphire.

btw, make sure a small is really what you want, it would be too cramped for me but if it works for you great.

Having used an Intuos 3 at work for some time i bought an Intuos 4 a while ago

i like it WAY better then the intuos 3 … main reasons :

the i4 dial is a couple of leagues ahead of the i3 strips !
the buttons are well placed on one side of the tablett
the oleds are nice (but mostly nice looking :))

it has downsides too as well :
the buttons are harder to press
the nibs wear very fast, as already said

i wouldnt change back again, i REALLY like the intuos 4
