optimize: mesh mEsS :\

#1

hi
im doing my first model in modo now. love the workflow but got a question. it looks like ive created a lot of unwanted mesh. my sds is all messed up now. when i select a point with lasso… that looks like 1 vertex… is 4 vertex in reality. when i exported the mesh to xsi i found out that i got plenty of double edges. and i cant get rid of them! :\

any ideas? dohh thx

It may help if you post a picture of your wireframe so we can suggest some options.

#3

ok… here it is.
1st part shows the regular poly view
2nd when i press tab button to convert to sds
3rd is after i tried merging/joining vertices…

:
and what’s more strange i got plenty of quad-vertexes in the mesh even if they look like single point…

It certainly sounds like you have some duplicate geometry. Simply merging verts may not solve theproblem completely because it might still leave behind some extra polys made from the same verts. You should use the Info viewport to see if you can locate any odd geometry as well as using Unify to remove erroneous polys.

Good luck! The model looks promising…

in my experience with the Join verts tool… i have found that many a time i get stray/duplicate geometry that often bites me in the ass when i try have it textured. I would send it to a friend to texture in xsi, but xsi wont import the model because of stray polys and polys connected to odd things like the extra polys created in a previous merge. just make go through your mesh and locate anomolys, delete faces and create them anew, etc.

the way i can tell that my mesh will import into xsi, or other programs ( not sure as i havent tested them yet) is by opening in silo and hitting smooth, if all looks well it will import.

hope this helps.

if not… you know where to find more help

thanks for ur answers. it looks like my mesh is one huge anomaly :\

dunno how that happend… dohh… think ill trash this model and start a new one. bummer.

#7

It looks like there is very little wrong with the geometry. Merge the verts and start stepping up the merge randge. hide/unhide some of the problemed area and tweak. FOr the double geomerty use unify on them.

This should be a two minute fix if you take your time.

#8

Or, in the worst case scenario, u can kill all the polys, merge the points in a little range (1mm or so), and redo all the geometry by hand.

I´ts lame, I know, but just an idea…

#9

I’m not sure about that problem but why don’t you just merge vertices and unify to remove polygons that share the same edges.

The ripper.

#10

thank you all for your tips. after 15 minutes of war ive finally managed it  lol.

optimize function for this kind of stuff would be nice in the future releases of modo. just for the lame asses like me

ok… prepare for the wip!

thanks again.

edit: brad… when can we put our hands on 1.0.2?
