Open Source Non Linear Editing

#1

What non linear editing system did they use on Sintel? Was is open source?

#2

They used Blender. It has an editing program built in.

#3

Thanks mackdadd for responding. How’s it compare to Premiere?

#4

This is also open source.

Thanks Hardkorn. I had jst found it when you posted. ha! Looks good. have you tried it?
BTW. Is there an open source After Effects program?

#6
No , not testet.

CineFX/Jahshaka [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CineFX](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CineFX)

And the Blender Compositing Tools.

Nothing testet.

CineFX (aka buggy Jahshaka crashfest) is all but dead, with no word from the developers for a few years now.
Suggest you look at Blender, no where near as good an editor as something Like Premier or as good as After Effects in what it does but if you’re stingy enough you want something for free, if you learn how to combine its modelling, compositing and editing you’ve got all you really need

Alas, there is no FOSS After Effects style programs in development AFAIK, but there is a promising node based comper called Synapse, although the development pace is very slow:

Also Ramen, which is no longer FOSS, but is still free and quite rapidly developed by one guy:

You could also do some AE style motion graphics in Synfig Studio, although it is more of a Flash/Moho style app:

With any luck Blender will eventually merge functionality of the video sequencer and compositor so that we can use it as a mix of Nuke and AE powered by openCL

Thanks RichardMarklew and Zendorf. Good info. I really appreciate it.

I’ve got the beta of Lightworks. I opened it for a minute, then closed it. the UI sucks, and is not friendly, crashed (still beta), etc etc. maybe when it’s out of beta, but for now, not worth fighting with.
For some things, FOSS just isn’t good enough. I use Vegas Pro for my editing and basic compositing, and Blender’s compositor (rare usage for me), or Autodesk’s Composite (comes with Max design 2011/2011) (even more rare is my usage).
I used to use Blender’s NLE, but after trying Vegas Studio (and now pro), won’t go back.

Interesting. I have a working compadre who swears by Vegas. He’s an engineer by trade, not an artist, but says it’s a great tool he can be creative with (and I know that’s an important thing for him). I have Toxic but after watching the tutorials I was pretty turned off. A lot of people love it and swearby it, but Autodesk does the worst job selling their products IMO so it never captured my imagination. BTW, I’m moving more and more away from Maya and towards Blender.
