Open Figure Drawing Workshop with Ron Eyre, Hong Ly and Rebeccak 011

#201

Gosh! Thank you, Glen. I’m GRADUALLY adding some more stuff to my site now. The two life paintings I’ve up-dated - they’re a little larger now and have titles. The one you refered to has also words of explanation. It’s called “Call of the Wild”.

I’m having great difficulty keeping up with this site as WELL as participating the in FDF. I’ve just done a drawing for them today, and got to suplement it tomorrow with a water colour painting, with my brush secured to the end of a 30" bamboo cane! lol! I seem to have so little time to DO all I want to do these days. I’ve still got a lot more to put up on my site - AND to develop the tutorials there! I’m sorry if I appear to make only an occasional appearance here. I do try to keep abreast with what is going on here but it is such a vast site with all the links to other things, and this particular thead seems to have a couple more pages added to it every time I visit it! I’ve promised myself to have a go at one of Hong Ly’s poses as soon as I can for this thread. I thought I would like to try it with water colour pencils - used dry - on parchment paper.

I’m in awe at the wonderful work being produced here! I’m following your development of your painting of me closely, Rebecca!

God bless you all!

Ronnie.

Rebecca

I think I am confused…both paintings are great…
but
Aren’t they both Bouguereau?
:banghead:

RON…A thirty inch bamboo pole…I know the feeling, my eye’s are getting bad too, but
mostly in the other direction LOL… …JUST KIDDING… …Sounds like an interesting
way to paint, i’ve heard of it somewhere along the line, but have never tried it, would
like to see your results.
About getting lost on all these computer sites ect…Sure beats watching …TV…

So guys - here´s the final (?) painting. It was fun but difficult to step out of the referencephoto. And, I think I will start doing this kind of thing a lot more often.

Hi SaraD
Wow, what a beautiful fascinatingly picture. I am impressed.

Ciao,
Ravena

So, here is my update:

#206

Glen, thank you
I was actually quite nervous to put it up here… All of you always gives me a lot of praise for my figuredrawings, so I was afraid to dissapoint you  You singlehanded just gave me the courage I needed to try it again.

Hello All…

Rebecca, I can’t begin to express how excited I am about the OFDW. To make what could be a long story shorter… I’ve been a long-time lurker of CGTalk with only a few posts under another name (Chrysophylax). I was given a somewhat catchy nickname (Eric the Red) recently at work (Lightborne, Inc.) and I liked the name so much I thought I’d re-register under my new moniker. About the same time I discovered the OFDW and decided the give it a go. I thought I would hammer through the poses as sketches, refine them, and then narrow it down for a couple of color pieces. Crits are, of course, more than welcome. Here are the first four.

I think I feel the best about this one… but I have the nagging feeling that I didn’t quite make her ribcage big enough and that her right arm is a bit on the “chunky” side and needs to be more slender.

Again, I feel as though I am struggling with her right arm and that it needs to be a bit longer and more slender… but maybe that’s just an optical illusion since I didn’t include any shading.

Curses!.. it’s that right arm again! Perhaps not long enough? It looks as though it is not leaving her enough room for her head, making her neck seem shorter than in the photo.

This one took less time. I noticed that since the model was… well… wrinkly… I took more of a loose sketch approach.

After I make the preliminary sketches for the other 3 poses, I plan on tightening all the sketches up before moving into color… please don’t be afraid to nit-pick in your critiques.

edit well… it seems my first post did work… I was just too impatient and didn’t see it load. so… um… hehe… sorry Rebecca… can you delete this post?

Looks very lovely, Sara. Really nice job on the entire image and for making it your own. Love the hair

Good Lord Sara!

this is fantastic! One day starts daydreaming I gotta try this, too.

Glenn,

Wisely said. 'tis true, but, alas! I’ll make a mess of it anyway, I am afraid, so it does not matter too much.

Ravena,

wonderful face lighting, looking forward to your further updates.

Hey, fellow Dortmunderin! - Wo in Dortmund wohnst du?

#211

Ravena Good work so far! You have a nice likeness going on in her face, well done

#212

Some fleshing out.

#213

Mecha - that is an incredible likeness you have to the model! Bravo

Marco J - I love the way you pushed the contrast on this one.

Rebecca- Great idea on the master study. I also vote for it. I love how your piece is turning out. It almost has the feel of a master study right now. I don’t know how to describe the way you are using the lighting almost “sculptural” if that’s a word. Anyway very cool.

Ended up working all day on Saturday doing color checks at press so not too much to show but here is a little update.

#214

Wow! Sara, LOVE the background. The bushes and sky are beautifully rendered! The whole scene looks natural, and yet with a ‘classical’ look!
Just one thing I feel about it, though: The figure, to me, doesn’t look, as yet, fully part of the background … still looks as if she’s floating a bit. It wouls make a big difference If you anchor the figure to the ground - give her weight - by darkening the tone of the shadow in the immediate vicinity of the figure and fading it away to the left away from the sky

Ronnie.

Eric the Red - wonderful drawings, they have a very real and massive feel as concerns the forms and their positions in 3D-space!I don’t know if you will work digitally from now onwards, but if proportional issues occur you can still correct them even if you are way up in the job of colouring your sketches…

#216

Rett: Thank you

I need visine right about now. I was flowing until I hit the hand area… Ive repainted that area about 4 times now and its really starting to wear thin on me. Im going to knock that out in the morning and then just clean up the rest. Im hitting the sack. - J

#217

Nighty, nighty Mecha. I´ll go to work, when you go to sleep

SaraD,

Great to see your background at last! I think it’s great to see you do this, and it takes guts to do something completely from imagination. I quite like the subdued color pallette, and the overall quality to the image which is quite serene.

One thing which might help the piece to feel more dynamic is if the clouds were a bit more expressive / dynamic, vs. being more striated, straight across the back of the image. Stahlberg has a great cloud painting tutorial here:

http://www.androidblues.com/cloudtut.html

I think it might be nice if the cloud pattern were to echo some of the emotion of the figure and to complement it in some way ~ but this is only a suggestion. As always, it’s great to see your work!

Thanks so much! Really appreciate your comments.

Your piece is developing nicely especially around the stomach and pelvis area ~ looking forward to seeing your next update!

Welcome aboard! Great to see you posting and no longer lurking. I’m glad to see these pencil sketches ~ would like to see more traditional work here, and I think it’s nice to be able to start out this way then paint them digitally (which is what I’m assuming you plan to do, though of course you are welcome to use any medium you like!)

I like your top image best, though I think your first, third, and fourth images are also strong. So much can change in the digital process that it’s not always necessary to have things perfected at this stage. I wouldn’t mind seeing any of these sketches developed further as paintings ~ looking forward to seeing your next steps!

Ravena,

Nice work so far, great to see your progress!

Mecha,

The upper torso and head especially are just beautifully done…really looking forward to seeing the final resolution on this piece! You’ve really nailed a likeness and the sense of who the model is ~ fantastic work so far, nicely done!

Great work everyone! :bounce:

Cheers,
