Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Sorolla, Zorn, Leon Master Copy - with Rebeccak 017

#421

Becca, thanks for the crit! I really hesitate to smooth the face more…perhaps I’m on the wrong way for a mastercopy, but my intention is to work out a certain difference between the absurd clothing and the face…fact is, that I don’t like the guy…Bashi-Bazouks have been irregular soldiers of the former Osmanian army, not paid, so they got what they want from depredation and they’ve been infamous for their brutality among the civil population…So I’ve just tried to catch his arrogant look, more than working out the face…
Just some thoughts, but perhaps I’ll give the face another chance befor finishing!

Paperclip, thank’s for the good suggestion:) , somehow I’m far from finishing…

Have a nice day!

Clippy,

Thanks for that link, that’s a great idea!

Sabie,

Wow, that’s so interesting that you chose to do this portrait, despite your aversion to the character. And what insight you’ve provided, of course I’ve been looking at this at face value alone. It’s interesting how psychologically one is affected by subject matter ~ I’m kind of fascinated by the fact that you chose to render a painting of a character which you have unpleasant knowledge of.

Cheers,

I didn’t know where to post this, still getting used to this vast site, anyway please feel free to remove this post if not suitable for this thread.

I have, mostly thanks to this thread, become addicted to learning from the great masters, so much so I took it upon myself to do a John Singer Sargeant copy.
I really took my time with this an tried to capture each stroke I could see. Apart from the cheek on our right, which looks a little too long, I think I cracked it, but I would like some expert advise from you talented bunch on how I could still improve things.
Thanks for looking.

Rebecca. Thank you so much, I hope so too.

Paperclip. amazing copy, really, it owns a traditional media feel. For me when you get that in a digital media, you can say you did a great job.

Hey Mal-1, fantastic job on that copy.

Dim. on the way to do another amazing copy.

Mazalo. Good job at the head study, I like a lot the palette you choose.

A little update for mine.

Critics and comments are very welcome

Hey guys, I’m back! I am doing “black”. He will be completely charcoal. Here is my OFDW WIP:

Sol - you like photobucket now. They completely axed me. I went to imageshack. I am liking it. It is easy to upload because it has a tool bar to download that goes into your explorer.

#432

It seems that PB is getting some errors, I haven’t realized that my image was incomplete till now, thanks for the advise Aggie, think I will move to imageshack too

#433

En! - Ri! - Que!

the values and the reflection edges on the dress look just otherworldy real…

#434

Thanks a lot Mr Mu, glad it likes you  thanks for the comment, I always apreciate them

#435

Here is a colorized test version

#436

Sol - PB said I had nudes depicted on it. Go figure… art! It is a violation of their terms.

#437

DigitalSol : Wow that is such a realistic colour render, I love the mono colour version as well its so real. You got the colour spot on and I predict your final image will be so very good, a true artist and great colourist too. Well done, I will soon attempt your workflow to see how it feels, I am very new to digital painting so I must try as many ways to produce the colour as I can.
Well done and I will follow your updates

Billy

Now I’m joining this workshop, I think it will help me. Here is my first step of my WIP, I began with a quick B&W sketch for lights and shadows.

#439

right i think i might be finished with this now…

let me know if you spot anything amiss, not sure i can do anything about it as my poor computer is only just able to cope with the size of the painting…

They dont have the right for do that, do they?, I mean one thing is forbid the nude photos but other is take down your account, that is silly, since is not pornography they are artistic nudes, (moving now to imageshack).

Billy, thanks a lot for your kind words, hope the progress and the final result likes you.
