Wow Rebecca, stunning and beautiful reference choice!
And Maladie is getting better by the hour while I am stuck with a bunch of cangaroos in my australian desaster.

Fear the turkās return! (albeit probably not for this oneā¦

Hi Rebecca,
Im new to this and really looking forward to having a go. Ive had a bash tonight but I def couldnt call it my ābestā
I was wondering does using the eye dropper and sampling colour direct from the pic count as plagerism or copying or is that OK?
Cheers
Ed
Dan Silverman,
No problem!
Mu,
The Workshop will continue for 4 weeks, by which time the Challenge will be over. Join us!
Ed777uk,
Welcome aboard!
Typically speaking, tracing and sampling colors directly from the original source image is considered cheating. Trust me, you will learn much more by attempting to match the colors yourself.
Regarding Color, there are some good resources on the Anatomy Forum here:
Color Theory and The Human Figure - NUDITY

I encourage beginners to start with Grayscale paintings, the process is described in depth here:
TUTORIAL SUMMARY - Anatomy Review 003 Shading Tutorial - Tutorial Material Only
You can also see the best work from the extended version of that Workshop here:

Looking forward to seeing your work!
Cheers,

Here is my initial sketch ⦠roughly 30 minutes of work (including the interruptions of my children who wanted to know what was going on
):

I have not completed the sketch (the rifle is not in there yet), but I have to head out. I will try to work on this later this evening. BTW - This sketch was done in Photoshop.
Dan Silverman,
Fantastic start with this! This should be an amazing OFDW.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Wow. Thank you!
Here is the completed initial sketch (I had to leave and complete the rifle when I got home):

Now comes the scary part (for me) ⦠to paint him
.
Donāt have much time right now, so hereās a quick thumb study. I may push it more later.

I hope I am not crashing this thread. You said you wanted wips, so I thought I would post as I go (or as I reach milestones). I really want feedback as painting has never been my thing. Here is the sketch over the background:

Iām pretty new to digital painting, but wanted to say āhiā and say that I plan to join this workshop. I hope to get something posted in the next couple of days.
Now I just have to decide which piece to do!
Martin,
Great to see you start in on this! We expect you to update!
Mikeface,
Welcome aboard!
Dan Silverman,
Wow, looking really great so far ~ looking forward to your updates. ![]()
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
I think I might have overextended myself a little here, but now that Iāve started Iām going to do my first attempt at a large-scale oil painting
this is the charcoal sketch on canvas so far (Iām still adjusting stuff here and there, but I figure I can probably correct most mistakes in the actual paint process)
90cmx120cm

Rebecca, Glenn
you are right! The challenge will be over in a few days.
I had been thinking about my new drawing schedule, because I will have worked through all the previous points of my last schedule and I actually could only think of one item for the list and that was: mastercopies.
However, I collected some ninety to one hundred plates mostly by Da Vinci whiich I intend to copy over the following weeks, so I was a bit reluctant to drift from this goal by planning on joining this OFDW.
But then I noticed I would be doing mastercopies in here, too! I would still be adhering to the planā¦
So, I am all settled. I will join in thenā¦

when the challenge is overā¦:banghead:

:banghead:
Dan its looking great.
Martin, I see you are juggling your time real good. (that load balancing we talked about;) °
Mr. Mu, glad you could join this one.
This is my first take on this piece. This is charcoal on 50X70CM charcoal paper.
My next step is to transfer it to canvas and proceed with the oil painting. I am also tempted to do this digital. So Iāll think about it and see how I feel tomorrow.

Cool work indeed for everyone, this will be a very competitive, Workshop, see ya soon.
