Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Sorolla, Zorn, Leon Master Copy - with Rebeccak 017

#361

hey everyone , heres another update

#362

had to cut and sever and amputate away at several places to make everything fit together better.
I had initially started to grid the painting, but I just felt to stiff following the boxes, and now I am caught in all those proportion inadequacies…

Well, we shall see…

#363

Hi…MR MU …LIKE THIS …YOUR DRAWING …ALOT …very strong mood created with that high contrast
between light and shadow.
You could get that same power going with just one broad brush…and a limited color range, say…deep redish purple…yellow…and white…you could get a really strong painting, by exploreing all the combinations that just those three colors can creat, when mixed…Might not
look exactly like the original colorwise…might look better.
You could just put a clear layer on top of your drawing, and just paint it in a bold fashion, mixing those three colors as you go along…be fast…cover big areas first,… work small areas second, and whatever details that you feel it may need…save tell last.
KEEP THE BRUSH BIG, for the first stage, and gradually reduce it’s size as you get towards details.
You have already gotten the hardest part done,…now it is time to have some fun with color.
You could creat ten different paintings in one day using that method that I just decribed, all
of the same subject, and still keep your drawing the way it is…great way to explore color,
brushwork, ect…and you will find yourself really loosening up in the process…plus you will
end up with a bunch of different color variations of the same painting…all having different
brush strokes…ect
Just an exercise, and another technique for learning…

Hi Rebecca and Everyone

Small update. Bringing the foreground into focus

Take Care Glenn

#365

Glenn - the development of your mastercopy is really wonderful!

About your suggestions:

That definitely sounds very interesting. I think I will try that at a later time, though. I want to take this drawing as far as I can within the timeframe and will start some colour experiments when the workshop’s over, because then I will be able to follow my prepared schedule for some time, anyway.

So thanks and look out for me getting all wild with colour…:scream:

#366

too many incredible works here now that there isn`t enough room (or enough time) to mention them, keep up the great works guys…
a head study so far, from sorolla…couple of hours i guess, give or take…

Hi, I saw this 3-4 days ago and decided to participate, I started to do the first one from Sororolla. I don’t like to copy stuff but i though it would be a good painting exercise.

I started this using acrylic on paper. I didn’t use grid, actually I hardly sketched it before, that is probably noticeable. i’m hopping to correct stuff with pant later. i know it may not be a good idea but it will make me work a little extra (more pratice :)).

Been working on it for about one hour now:

#368

hey glen , chris and luis good work so far! looking forward to seeing the updates.

And here is my last update and then the next will be the finished render

#369

SaraD,

This came out beautifully! I was happy to see you had posted it to the Gallery, here:

I really think this is one of your best pieces, and it’s so cool to see all the great OFDW pieces in your Portfolio. I’d really love it if you were to create a Tutorial! Keep up the great work!

Mu,

I really recommend laying in bigger areas of tone and then picking out the lights gradually. Try giving this an all over tonal gray layer then moving up the value scale from there. I think that this method will really help.

Glenn,
Looking great, keep pushing this, I would love to see it finished! :bounce:

krispee,

Looking great, nice to see you back here! I think your hues are so much richer in this piece and I look forward to your update.

-voraz-,

Hi there, I think it’s great you are doing this in acrylics! One thing I would really recommend is not to use white very much if at all in the initial stages of a painting. Try using yellow ochre instead for lights, and mix your black from alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, viridian green, and burnt umber.

Check out this little materials list / tips thread if you get the chance:

TUTORIAL - Acrylic Painting Tips
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=363285

Also I would suggest taking a large brush and giving the entire painting a wash of burnt sienna, to knock down your values, which have gone too light / white. I wouldn’t recommend painting on paper unless it is extremely heavy paper since you have to use so much water and paper will simply buckle. Try using illustration board, canvas, or even gesso coated cardboard if you can.

I look forward to seeing your update!

Matt,

This is looking great! I think the head is a bit orange and you might want to check the angle of the head relative to the body. The fur is beginning to come along really nicely, and I really hope you keep at the rendering of this to complete a nice portfolio piece!

Great stuff everyone!

Cheers,

IĀ“d love to do a tutorial - the only problem is that I hardly myself know how I do it:( And I mean it! I donĀ“t follow any artistic paths, like underpaint then shadows then highlights etc. I donĀ“t have that skill… I paint what I see in different order each time, and one small piece of the painting at the time. So I donĀ“t think I can tute that much, IĀ“m afraid. All I can do is to show you the different stages in the WIPĀ“s.
I can share my brushes, colorsets etc.
I“m gonna start on the next master copy (I“m going for the tiger, actually) and I“ll see if I find any order in the chaos, and try to explain.

#371

This is my first post here, Krispee led me to this forum from another, and as I am currently looking into the works of old masters this thread is perfect for me.
Can I just say that all the works here blow me away, and some of the photorealistic reproductions are amazing…I am an artist who cannot produce such works, and tend to be more expressionistic in my approach, so I really appauld SaraD and Rebeccak as well as some others who are producing amazing work here.
Anyway enough of my waffle, this is what I came up with after a few hours playing in Painter IX. Thanks for looking.

#372

Wow…there is so much great work here!

Today’s feeble progress… worked a bit on the legs… about 2 hours this stage (maybe 8 total??)

SaraD, feel free to do whatever kind of Tutorial you like! If it’s stages with just explanations of your thought processes, that’s more than enough! I’m sure not all of us work methodically (I certainly don’t).

Mal-1,

Welcome aboard! It’s great that kris brought you here ~ look forward to seeing more of your work on the Anatomy Forum! I think you have a great start here. I quite like the ā€˜looser’ approach and have a lot to learn from it. You should definitely check out the work of zhuzhu, whose work is SPOTLIGHTED here:

I think you will quite like his painterly digital brushstrokes, he is quite an inspiration around here!

botched,

Gorgeous progress! I admire your patient, systemmatic approach to your piece. It’s looking gorgeous!

zhay13,

This turned out beautifully! It’s been great to have you as a part of this OFDW, and I hope that you will participate in more ~ or continue to work on another piece here! If you can, please post both a version here that is 800 pixels in width, as well as a high resolution version as a link. Also, I would love to see you do a Tutorial as well for your piece, only if you have the time!

If you can do one, please create a new thread here:

Tutorials and Workshops

and call it: TUTORIAL - OFDW 017 Step by Step - by zhay13

I also hope you will submit your piece to the Gallery.

Great work here!

well, some great work going on here…

matellis: thanks dude, love your work, the detail in the tiger skin is wonderful, beautifully done…is this done now or more to come?

Mark: great work, fabulous painterly feel to it, really captured the flowing strokes that Sorolla seemed to do…

zhay: excellent work dude, almost an impressionist look to your work, love the colour palette, cant really crit it much, apart from the left hand looking a tiny bit small, but that may be just me, and it doesnt really alter the look of the painting…

botched: well, this is amazing already, love the way youre building up the hatch lines, gives it depth.....just wondering if you could work even more darks into the shadows, or is this something youre going to do later on?

rebecca: thanks, will update soon, and it looks like i have a lot of catching up to do already lol, everyone works so fast!

I have already been lurking around zhuzhu’s work and think it is incredible, so much so I posted a link to it at another forum (Art&Artistry), under the heading of ā€œA Digital Masterā€.
Thanks for the welcome, I hope to be around for more of these, it’s great to be a part of and a great learning experience.

Thanks Kris for encouraging me to come over and try this out, as well as your comments.

zhay13,

Sounds great!

kris,

Thanks for bringing Mal-1 on board!

Mal-1,

Ah, that’s great to hear that you’ve discovered zhuzhu! It’s great to have someone already involved in another online community participate here!

Here is my update for today ~ some work on the gun, mainly, and the headpiece thingies ~ 2 flavors, bw, and with a color layer on top:

spotlight on the decision making process:

two versions with gray layers to bring back unity to the drawing after I had to ā€œlasso toolā€ many areas of it…

first: charcoal layer set to multiply and then duplicated, mirrored

second, 50% grey layer, half transparent and given a paper structure treatment to match the drawing appearance on the canvas underneath

figuring it out right now, til later!
