I had quite a difficult time in making it as similar as possible still there are few things that are not quite right, direction would be appreciated
Open Figure Drawing Workshop - NEW BARGUE - 022
Awesome start, everybody!!
Here is mine⦠from Rod Seffensās image
done in Corel Painter with a charcoal brush

hey! i want to take part in that workshop! Itās my first time and iām just a beginner.
Iāve choose a b/w render couse i have really problem with shading and i want to focalize on that aspect.
Iāve choose the alien portrait by Damien Canderle like others
My first step

Oh, you guys rock!
Iridyse, I knew you were going to do something amazing the second I read you were goint to join in. I see that I wasnāt wrong. I must sai I LOVE your painting style!
Anand, one can sure make a piece look as if it was done with traditional medium. Very good!
TurbiX, ha, I knew many people will do that alien, because itās just so paint-worthy! I may suggest using bigger brushes at the start and also not going into detailing too soon.
Rebecca, lovely, I like the contrast.
DigitalSol, greatness! If you will get that cast material well, itāll be too amazing!
ericyeo, really great to see different approaches on this piece. Keep going.
Now with my own study. I chose Damien Canderleās piece, because itās realistic with a fantasy theme. Iām not using a grid because I donāt like it. I had the original and my study side by side same size to do the silhouette, but now I only trust my eyes.
I also chose a piece that I think I will do in oils! Yes, one study for this workshop wonāt be enough for me.
Hereās the start

thanks for your suggestion razz! that is always my problem and i mean really always!! i canāt make a general impression with big brushes and i tend to start detailling immediatly
i really donāt know how to try this aspect, i keep trying but i feel like iām just doing nothing if i donāt start detailing. Donāt know if iāve been clear eheh
Hi Dennis K,
Pretty good effort, I think your problem of the head leaning to one side can be resolved by start out with sktch of the overall volumes/shapes inserting a center line before you go into detailing. Though its nice to have a clean finished drawing I believe its better at this stage to not erase anything just draw you starting lines lighter and as you develope your sketch more (you have all the important details sketched in correct proportion and placement.) you go back in and darken your like work.
Thanks for the crit Iridyse, I tried tweakin the nostrils a bit and added a darker core shadow to the bridge of the nose. How does it seem now.
An OFDW, yea! It has been so long since I have done one. Now that I do not have anything to do, but my computer crashed that had Painter on it. I do not have a wacom for this computer. I will do it traditionally. Anyone know where I can find a good wacom cheap?
Enrique! So nice to see some new work by you, man! Howāve you been?
Printing out the ref right now. Maybe I will have something to show tomorrow.
Looks like eveyones off to a great start ![]()
started on one by Damien Canderle last night on 9x12 sketch paper

Hello everyone Iām kinda new here and I have to say that Iām kinda nervous and excited at the same time seeing this is my first time joining a workshop here.
For my first study, Iāll be using one of Damien Canderleās piece. I hope to get some valuable critiques on it.
Thank You.

truly great start from everyone!
Anand - it really looks cool with those Painter tools - just like the real thing
Billy_Z - he feels a little unstable at the moment - the left leg seems to be going towards the right too much⦠[not sure Iām making myself clear ]
razz - awesome start
Rebeccak - gorgeous already!
DigitalSol - excellent
Well hereās my very humble beginning⦠darn that grid transfer took me ages  ⦠my choice - Antropusās Swimmer

Animegedon: Yours is looking good, I would like to see it with more texture, but thats all
Iridyse: Hello Super Cheyu, its great to be with you again in another OFDW :D, well, what can i say, your is looking awesome, i already liked it, and you dont even detail it
hughs
Rebecca: Great progress so far, the face is looking really good, and i really love the shoulder
ericyeo: Looking good i just would add a little bit of contrast, the shape is great overall.
Dennys-k: Its looking good so far, something that i would check is the right position of the elements, like the eyes or the ears, and the headās shape, the negative space is a great way to correct stuff like this just watch it more
anandpg: great job!!
warpy; looks good,I think that the hand is in the right position and shape, but there is something about the space between the face and the hand that dont match at all in my opinion maybe the problem is there, otherwise it looks very nice for me
TurbiX: Very Solid start, I only suggest you to wait a little bit more to add detail, keep it up
Razz, That`s looking awesome so far, canāt wait to see how this ends, great job indeed
Mu: Hey Mu!, how are you man, i have been a little bit bussy here and there, and I took a little rest of posting here but I hope start posting at the same rate that before, thanks for asking , i really want to see your work here soon!
FateBringer: Looking good so far!, keep it up!
Billy_Z: The overall shape and color looks pretty nice to me, there is sometheing that makes it looks a little bit unsatable, i think that the problem is in the knees , just check it maybe im wrong
Intervain: Damn man your start looks very nice already, love that sensation of deepness, keep it up, i really want to see it finished
thanks DigitalSol⦠Iāll try
- got a bit too much into it so yet another update for the day - and enough
blocking in the values. I can already tell that all the skin details are going to be a nightmare

FateBringer nice shading
Anandg Iām liking the traditional feel from the charc brush in painter
Intervain wow already frm your beginning deailing feeling depth.
Razz nice work alrady starting to feel the volume in you forms.
Billy_Z good start continue working on it a bit more, adding detail, smaller sepration in the muscles. and cleaning up the white lines when you reach cloaser to the end they are a bit distracting since its on a black back round white lines are the highest contrast at the moment so their the first thing you see and they take the viewers attention away frm the image as a whole.
Turbix Good start, try not to get into the details too early, try defining the overall volume first get the shape of the head readingas a volume in space then move onto the smaller deatils.
DigitalSol thanks, Iāll try to add some texture to the nose.
hereās a sketch I did of using one of Anandgās 3d renders as reference. Iām probably going to trying paintering it in painter essentials or using paint tools in studio tool paint. just want to know if there is anything that seems horribly out of place be for I start. the beginning sketch was done as a simple volume study of the human figure.
FateBringer - thank you! Great progress on your sketch
Keep it up!
Animegedon - thanks
OOH - great choice of render - looking forward to seeing how this develops since it started out as a painting, turned into a sculputure and now itās back to 2d again
a wee bit more - itās quite addicting ;):
