Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Mixed Masters - 020

shyamshriram - Really like the face!! it’s coming along beautifully!

Glen - definite improvement - I think the upper eyelid of the right eye is a tad too low... then again who am I to teach you *blushes*

Well - I call this b&w version finished! :) I've finally decided to paint the ornaments on the cloth - it's basically just smudges :) nothing as detailed as in Ingres' version but I think it's still working fine and I'm tired ;)

and this is the first colour pass... I'll be correcting some stuff with colours on top of the b&w so if you see something really annoying tell me :) [like the white piece of cloth on the chair ;P]

EDIT:

played around with some parts - I think I’m about to say ‘finito’ and no more to that one - you can find a higher res version in my portfolio! I’m through…

thanks to everyone for your encouragement and helping me go further than I’ve ever imagined I could! Keep going people!

My, my, this workshop is hitting off quickly, and its going all the way through christmas!

I have been playing around with both painter and photoshop, and I think I will stick with photoshop. I will try and do a Monochrome version first, and if successful, then I will go for colour. When I was messing I was having trouble finding the right hues and values, hopefully the Monochrome version will teach me something.

Any tips? It will be my first time attempting this with a computer.

#304

I think I’m kinda finished. The only thing that bothers me is the rock he’s carrying.

#305

Guys im glad to join in this workshop ,… I couldn’t join with the last workshop but i tried to participate in this workshop. Here is my Painting just started about 30 min before and here is the work in progress image of my painting…

I welcome all the critics and comments…

#306

Wooh, Intervain, that’s fantastic colour effects. How do you apply the colour over your greyscale underpainting? Soft colour brush in Multiply mode?

Here my After 001 stage 6:

WIP can be seen at my signature thread.

#307

FateBringer - thanks

shapemaster - great one

vincent1 - thank you! it’s normal colours in ‘color mode’ + normal mode for all the stuff painted on top later, obviously  Hope that helps!

well… having done that one I’m off to learn Painter as promised to Mal-1

#308

Learn Now!!

Great work on the Ingres…Amazing detail and great colour job!!!:bounce:

#309

hi
I decided to pick another reference - another Leighton- , as the previous one proved too hard for me. Obviously it should be easier to do face close-up, right?

I’m in the grayscale stage now.

Small update. Still adjusting
Amazing how subtle his color values are.
A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW…FOR SURE.:scream:

Intervain…Thanks for the suggestion on the eye, you were right… BEAUTIFUL JOB ON YOUR PAINTING BY THE WAY…:bounce:
Going for the whole painting on this one,…just working outward from the focal point of the painting,…the EYES…

Take care
Glenn

ooooh nice update Glen! Really like how you did the areas around the eyes [the eyelids!] btw are you going for the whole image or just the head?

#312

Hey, everyone…

Wow, “good going” to those who have finished already. And “keep at it”, to those of us still in the throes of creation.

I finally have an Ingres update to post. Mine still looks “harder and older” than the original - work yet to do to get his face right.

Also still working on the values version, but wanted to see if I could apply the colour layers and see the effect (the look of Intervain’s vibrant blue dress was so inspiring!).

[left]hi,
impressive wips going on this thread!
iam very slow, and dont really do stuff for many hours straight, little update.

YMS / Yvonne…

GREAT JOB SO FAR…:applause: …If you want him a little younger looking, you might lighten up the shadows around his chin and side of upper jaw/ bottom of cheek areas…a little more rosey color maybe…Ingres starts out with red as his dominate color on the canvas…that red shines through in every part of his painting, kind of changes to a gray purple, when the gold orangish
shin colors are put on top of it…You might also try softening and lightening up the edge under the chin and jaw…don’t forget that light area that is just under the darkest area on the side of his jawline by his chin…side of face closest to viewer…creates that roundness and sofness…Those two things might help to convey the youth you are going after…just a couple of thoughts that might be of use to you …don’t know…but you never know…:scream:
Glad that I’m not the only one trying to do his portrait…the closer I look at his painting, the more in awe I am of his skll…
Like I said…GREAT JOB SO FAR…Yvonne…Looking forward to seeing your next update…

#315

Many thanks, Glenn, for the great advice…

My poor guy had

that light area that is just under the darkest area on the side of his jawline
but I lost it in one of the many “surgeries” on his face!

I can see that I will have to put a bit more thought into the colouring - you’ve done such a helpful analysis on Ingres’s working with his colours - thanks again.

(Your more painterly approach is looking so impressive. )

Some absolutely great work here i wish i had time to comment on everybodys. Thanks Ivy00 on your comments on how to paint from greyscale but i won’t be needed it as i am quitting. I have’nt worked on it at all for the pass week and everytime i try i get frustrated and stop after 5 mintutes. I think maybe this particular pic might have been a bit too much for me. Thanks for the workshop Rebeccak and whos knows one of these days i might even finish something.

Ps. Her face would not have been left like that this pic needs too much rework.

#317

A few comments in a bit, but mitze, I would encourage you not to quit! If you like, try focusing on a particular area in detail, such as the face - and just try to work on that for the duration of the Workshop. I am at present also feeling overwhelmed with the piece I’ve chosen, but I’m just going to plug forward and see how much I can get done. I hope to see more of your work here - you’ve got a really nice start, and it would be nice to see one part of the painting further developed.

Awesome stuff - I’ve been admiring yours. She looks just a tad aggressive - but I think your progress is excellent.

HladekStepan,

Great to see your progress! I might suggest double checking the distances between eyes, nose, lips - keep going!

Glenn,

Awesome start!

YMS,

A big WOW - extremely impressive work! Can’t wait to see your progress with this!

renderwhite,

Keep going! Some good stuff laid down as a basis here.

An update from me - slow going, but just taking it a step at a time:

craban nice to see your workspace. Her nose seems a tad too long

Rebeccak wow one can pick your paintings out so easily… very nice and unique style of digital painting.

mitze you just can’t quit now that you’ve made it this far

renderwhite keep going… love where this is going

YMS wow… you never cease to amaze me! Ab fab!

SpiritDreamer :bounce::bounce:

HladekStepan she is looking at something/someone that is higher than her head. the angle is a bit off. Great start!

vincent1 nice one!

shapemaster that 's a real hard pose to replicate. I think you pulled it off nicely. Also, there is a lot of volume in there which I really like! Top Class!

FateBringer keep going, looking good sofar

So I lost motivation to re-start nr14 on A2… I now started on nr 7 in painter. It looks more like a picasso at this stage so obviously, there’s a lot to do.
