HEY …Rebecca…I’ve been posting wips in here,…wasn’t thinking about the numbers…never entered my mind…SORRY…
Should I go back and edit the wips out, and just leave the last finished ones posted,…or you can if you want to,…your better at it than me…also, are my pictures to big…let me know…

Open Figure Drawing Workshop - HANDS - 023
#20, I know… I should have concentrated on the hand more, but the painting was so nice - I got lost and spent too long

hai it sounds very interesting. its not only an inspirational journey to look at the contributions but this workshop also would certainly help us learn a lot and get us back in shape. sorry to trouble rebeccak but a small clarrification the contribution should be limited to 25 different sketches or the process of a single study? all the best to all and here is my sketch using painter…

You got me staring at the original for ages trying to work out the missing finger
Yes… the index finger is behind the thumb, and you can sort of ‘imagine’ it there in the shadow between the thumb and the middle finger. I think you’re very close to capturing that hand, strangeness and all
a.
i will be working on
Michelangelo (1475-1564)
David [detail]
Marble, 1504
Galleria dell’Accademia, Florenceokay,
so here’s what i have so far…

Finally someone forces me to draw hands.
Heres me first one. Not very accurate, but since it’s the first out of 25 that’s ok I guess.
I had no pictures available, so I just looked at my left hand as reference.

trying to catch up, didn’t check for 2 days and it’s already 10+ pages…
HawVer: ha, nice pun. Thanks. I agree, the shadow is a little too dark.
Rebeccak: Thanks! I do tweak to my own taste
Here’re the make up ones I’ve missed. Busy with work, so I had to spend less time on it. it’s day 4 right?
Day 02

Day 03

Day 04

EDIT: fixed link.
I haven’t got a scanner, and my drawings blow, so I did one in Zbrush. Was going well, then it didn’t, then I got annoyed. i’m going to move on now, and start another one, as this one is starting to irritate me. (based on #34 btw) Good work everyone, I’m not experienced enough to crit anything, but am enjoying everyones progress.

Ok, the second one was harder, partially to the fact that i made the drawing a lot smaller to save some space.
I hope the proportions are all right

Very inspiring work in this workshop.
It’s really great to see not only 2d but also 3d works.
Here’s my first hand.
Just line art in Artrage2, but hopefully I will have time to do a colored sketch later on.

Wow, great to see all the entries coming in! Love seeing the mix of 2D and 3D here. Keep it up everyone.
Glenn, no worries!
It’s a general reminder for all.
Oh, right, i forgot to mention:
Rebbeca - That blocky, straight line aproach helped (forgot the name), thanks
You’re welcome.
That approach has helped me as well - it’s certainly nothing new, but I was introduced to it by Ryder’s book. If you are interested in seeing how you might apply this approach to a more complex area of the body, such as the torso, there are WIP posts of a block in approach to a Hogarth copy (for demo purposes) here:

Here’s hand #3 from me which took me about 40 minutes.

I just couldn’t resist using the colour picker
Rebeccak, can I ask you for your opinion? Since I’ve only just started to try and become a better painter and basically have done very little colour studies would you think it’s a good idea to practice colour studies on something less difficult than human skin? Like the classic bowl of fruit still life?
I think I’ll keep the rest of the hand studies I do for this workshop monochromatic.
Or am I just chickening out?
I think you’re doing fine, but I’d try not using the color picker, as you’ll just get addicted to it.
Maybe try some grayscale studies first? Alternately, I’d just check out calan’s very nice gifs - note how she’s using only about 3-4 values. Try the HSB slider in PS (Hue Saturation Brightness) which will allow you to choose variants of hues and saturation easily - make swatches of just a few hues in lighter and darker shades, and use the eye dropper off of your swatches by pressing alt while in brush mode and selecting the color from your swatches. Keep going, good stuff so far.
Yikes, lots of wonderful hand studies already posted. Taking baby steps - my goal is to learn some hand structure as best as possible with drawing studies. In addition to studying all the postings here with Rebecca’s comments, am also using an old Loomis “Drawing the Heads and Hands” book for basic guidance. As he and people here have stated you have literally your own hands to use as live models(!). So I hope to take that leap.
Main points am trying to remember: the palm is cuplike; the front of hand is convex; the muscle of thumb is the largest in the hand; the hand itself is very pliable. And I try to suppress that little voice in back saying “hands are hard to draw!!!” –
