A quick value study, made in somewhat under an hour. I will try and use this OFDW to work on my current study areas, gesture and values. I will make a sketchlike gesture-study next.

Here goes:

Rebecca, I thinks your work on Jesus face is great, the other on the left, still needs a little bit more of work, over all a great work, keep on going.

Guido: great work, it seems that all of us are trapped on Emmaus, good to see the other option, and with such great technique.

Update, I had been work on the details, for now only on the left character, and even he is not finished, here are some pics

Maybe I will not post much today because I have lots of work in the real life.
I hope u like it, and give an opinion, because I feel that it helps for improve, thanks

Maladie,

Great to see you tackle this head on, I can’t wait to see your progress!

Digital Sol,

Thanks for your comments! I agree, I need to really refine the leftmost character’s face. Hopefully I can do that tonight.

I love the detailing you’ve done on the leftmost character in your painting ~ beautiful work on the cloth, it looks like you really enjoyed painting that. The greater contrast is really working well to make the character ‘kick’.

By the way, I notice that you don’t have a CGPortfolio ~ you (and everyone) should definitely create one if you get the chance!

Introducing the CGPortfolio

Any CGTalk member can make one. I love the feature personally, it’s the coolest thing CGTalk has going on right now!

Anyway, great to see your update!

Cheers,

Thanks Rebecca, I really enjoy on painting this piece, Caravaggio, is my most admired old master, and the Supper at Emmaus, one of his most beautiful masterpieces (IMHO).

Im a noob on CG talk, thats why I have not a PORTOFILIO here, I didn’t know how to do it, thanks to you I will.

Thanks again.

Digital Sol,

You’re welcome! Looking forward to seeing your CGPortfolio.

Hello,

@Digital Sol & Rebeccak

fantastic work. And the details… respect!

Hmmm, I think I will stop here and go back to try some other technics to paint. Perhaps with a cut-out of the other pic. This is too much for me and my patience and I began to botch :frowning: Made some color correction and work out a bit the dreadlocks lol of the Jesus.

Sorry for that.

LG,
Ellie

Pretty slack today, so very minor update:

I’m really not pleased with this at all, Thinking of starting all over or doing the other image, I know I shouldn’t but I’ve gone so badly wrong I might as well start over. I’ve learnt a lot painting this and I think next time i will have a clear vision of what i need to do and when, because this time i really did not have a clue what I was doing.

This is 100% zoomed. I seem to be painting smaller than other people, does it matter?

Edit: Rebecca, I’m considering buying a CGS membership, what kind of things are in the private forums? Tutorials?
Also I would love to make a tutorial, I dont know if I am good enough though.

Elliepower,

Looks great! Keep going with this, you’re doing a fantastic job!

Hiya Zapan! Thanks for chearing! Gogo Korean juice!

Teck,

Keep pushing them values!

Jack,

I wouldn’t give up on this! You can change this digitally in whichever way you choose, remember. If you are not already working at 300 dpi, I recommend doing so ~ this will allow you to get a much greater range of detail. I would save a copy of your version, and resize it to 300 dpi. It may be a bit blurry, but you can always re~detail.

I think this has tons of potential, and I would hate to see you give up. If you need to move the position of parts of the figure, select with the lasso tool, feather your selection, and copy and paste and resize / rotate / etc. that particular item. For example, if you wanted to move the left character further to the left, you could do that pretty easily, and then paint on a layer on top to reblend the character into the background. Digitally, you can more or less change things however you want.

Keep plugging away at this, I think you have a great start! Things always look a bit messy in the beginning, but if you keep working at it, you will really come up with a nice result!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Guido: thanks! I have to laugh a little bit at the notion of me helping you, when I was just drooling over your skill and beautiful brushstrokes. Are you using painter? And making the broad strokes, do you work on one layer? It’s a beautiful workflow, or looks like it at least. I wonder if I could do something similar, but I think if I don’t practice with shapes and masses first it would end up very sloppy:).

Ellie: I don’t know you or anything, but it’s really funny to see you predict something likely to happen to you, and two pages later it actually starts happening:). You said you weren’t gonna finish this…well, today is the first day I’m able to see your thumbnails (no idea why) and all I can say is wow! Please don’t quit! Take it to the next level, where I would love to go but am not able yet. Anyway don’t wanna push you or anything, just cheering you on!

Hello, great update here Jack, well I work in a promotional agency as graphical designer, for the experience I can tell u that, if u work at 300 dpis u can print the artwork till 5 times larger, (500%), without too much visible quality loss, and if u work at 100 dpis, u can print it at 100%, thats my 2 cents.

Hope this was usefull, Jack u are very talented since I read u are 14, dont u?

#94

Rebecca,

Thanks for the encouragment and tips, you gave me an idea too! If I do that feathered lasso tool thing, then Ctrl and T I can free transform and make the middle character’s head smaller! Then I can smooth out some things so it doesn’t feel messy and get back on track.

Sorry a realy noob question but whats dpi and how do i change it?

about tutorials where can I paste them?

edit: Sorry, I didn’t see your post digital sol, So dpi lets you print bigger? I still a bit confused, i understand pixel size though. Yes I am fourteen, fifteen in three weeks , I really enjoy drawing, thanks for the compliment mate!

Btw Your top left character is looking amazing.
Close ups are really insightfull i think, it should be made law to post them

#95

great work in here … pity i dont have time for this

rebecca: it looks great so far … one thing i noticed on the first glance: the character on the right is a bit too high … he should be a little bit lower

#96

The dpis number is the actual number of pixels that there is in one inch of your artwork, When u make a new document u can choose it on the new document window, after this u can resize the image, Menu: Image: Image Size: Resolution. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Glad ti hear u like my painting.

Hi Rebecca and everyone:

Am taking some time out to teach myself how to use my newest toy:
Zbrush - Amazing Program
But couldn’t resist playing with this one a little though.
Some really nice starts happening on here so far. Very impressive for sure.
Can’t wait to see them finished. Should be great!

Take Care
Glenn

so many great paintings in here already!

Knorke!

Rebecca - very sensual gradation in the face details and graceful hands.

Jack - Don’t worry mate, you are doing great. You saw for yourself the problem with the head’s sizes and you have all the tools to change this. I am still stunned at your talent.

as concerns dpi: it’s dots per inch. Your monitor is very likely to show you something between 72 and 92 dpi. If you start a new painting or scale it you can change not only aspect ratio (the width/height in pixels), but also change how many of them are shown on an inch.
Home and normal office printers print at 300dpi. So, if you have a pic 3000 pixels wide and with a resolution of 300dpi it will turn out to be 10 inches wide when printed (3000/300).
If on the other hand you use less than 300 dpi the print size will be scaled down as the printer can only print at 300 dpi.
Correct me anyone if I have gotten anything wrong.
And as concerns tutorials: I hope you have seen the tutorial sticky in the art theories forum?

Digital Sol - I like what you are doing, especially like the guy on J.C.'s right. As concerns blending I have found the softedged brushes to work wonders. You already are good at establishing the forms with harder edged brushes. No reason to not use the softedged one, too.

Kudos to Lotekk for non-conformist choice of topic!

Glenn - always feels like geologists wet dream at these early stages. Minerals becoming alive!:scream: Intruiging as always.

Maladie - well, either way your tonal was helpful so shoosh! Im working in photoshop on the one layer yup.

update for today, just working most places at once. Painting it pretty zoomed out and squinting my eyes like crazy, still fleshing out tones and colours apart from that piece of cloth (got a bit hasty to detail it)

oh yeh thnx Rebecca that HSB colour slider is the best ever! i read your post about it before i began, forgot to mention it tho. SUch a huge help.
