Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Angels & Devils - 021

Hey Everyone. I love the topic for this OFDWS and big thanks to “MechaHateChimp” for starting it. There have been a lot of good posts so far.

Here are a couple of the quick sketches that I have done for my first piece. I like the pose but not sure about the lighting or the horns just yet. Good thing we have a whole month and these are just concepts. Posting more soon - S

Oil on cotton canvas, after about 2 hours…

Great work everyone so far!

Well here is my take.

Since I have never, and I mean never done one of these before, I chose to go with a small detail. I am pretty pleased with how it all came out.

I learned a TON doing this, and if I have time I may start on another one.

Here are the process images, from start to finish, where I saved them at. All in all about 4 hours in this.

Sketch:

Lots of great stuff. Here’s mine so far. I went in a little too close, so this is really just practice. I tried to get some more focus on shading. Any advice before I head over to the “real” thing would be greatly appreciated.

#147

Looking good everybody… cant believe how much participation is going on in this thread!

Heres another sketch… tried to keep it a little cleaner… its a little janky at the mo. Head placement looks a little goofy and the shoulders are off. I need to reference body in the same position. Some more updates soon - J

#148

mvhovland, great to see your step by steps - hope you can tackle another or perhaps the body. Glad you got a lot out of it!

Here’s a bit of an update to the composite sketch - hoping to start the digital version tomorrow:

Rebecca, i’d also love to see a dragon from you some time, something to really make St. George sweat

Eduart – nice progs on the satyr, he’s looking very lascivious in the latest

Mercuralis, you’ve got a classic sedution going on there, loking forward to more progress. maybe think about having the angel emerging from shadow similar to the devil? she’s very strongly lit at present for chiarosucro.

DeathStarChris – interesting idea, but aren’t angels supposed to be genderless, like a species separate from humans?

iman121 – keep on truckin’! things are starting to develop well

nimal – thank you for the compliment. i’m just a pipsqueak compared to Matisse, though. i often develop greyscale first and then color as well, we should compare techniques for coloring sometime.

kboss – good things starting to happen, the armor looking particularly snappy. keep it up!

SpiritDreamer – the juicy impasto look of the base of the horns is an eye-grabber, hope it stays through the Zbrush treatment. possibly dumb question – did you intend for both horns to be pointing in the same direction?

vANON – i like the way your forms are starting to interact, quite a feeling of gruesome activity happening.

killermachine – good start, interesting seeing the sketch done in non-repro blue. you a cartoonist, comix artist, keyliner?

Nothingness – your “vain angel = fallen angel” concept is solid (isn’t Vanity one of the seven deadlies?). have you thought about the angel adoring herself and the devil making eye contact?

Matwire – solid strokes on the satyr, great leeriness in the eyes.

shanesart – coming along well; i like the alternate horns better, good volume in the sketch

default-rol – what size is your canvas? pic makes it look generous for a detail but i’m just guessing. good start!

mhovland – lookin’ good, interesting seeing the many steps.

Asatira – good warm-up sketch. will you be doing a full tone drawing for your piece?

MechaHateChimp – i really like the “humanity” i see in your latest devil sketch, like maybe it’s a turn on the “angel come down to earth and becomes human” story. a reluctant devil?

whew!

wanted to finish the stadium tonight but i’m too bushed. here’s the prog so far:

Giordano’s cherubs are now fans in anti-grav box seats, with the required funny hats. is the crowd texture working OK?

#150

chimpmasque: Thanks for the words. I am planning on doing tonal, which will be rather different for me. I’ve gotten used to doing art mostly in lines and without much value.

Your painting seems to be coming along well. Nice idea with the cherubs.

Great work everyone

Wow, there’s some awesome work going on in this thread, should prove to be a great workshop, kudos to joel for picking a great topic.

Here’s my start:

based on this reference stock photo: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/47518087/ which was too Bougereau/Leighton to pass up. So that’s how I’m going to attempt (being the operative word here) to colour it. Maybe in Painter, if it doesn’t scare me off.

Joel I love the flow of your charcoal drawings, but I think this last one is my fave of the two I’ve seen. The first guy reminded me a bit of Spawn!

Rebecca
Wow, that rubens copy almost beats the original for me… so much dynamism and action in those strokes, quite gorgeous. It’s great to see you working from imagination, not that I don’t love your master copies (see previous comment!), but it’s something different, which is always good! The first sketch reminded me of the lochness monster a little, before you added the horse’s torso and hooves.

Glenn
Recognised yours from your anatomy thread, and it’s great to see you giving life to that character with the usual SpiritDreamer flair! Love the texture the liquify has given the hair, one of the best uses of that filter I’ve seen.

Chipmasque this one grabbed me for its sheer ingeniuity, i really love the way you’ve interpreted the original painting, and the trickery in the clouds paying homage to the original wings is a wonderful touch. Kudos on the metal too, thats damnable hard to paint and look convincing, but you make it look easy!

Eduart love the colours in that Satyr’s face (is it a satyr? I forget…) and you’ve pinned that knowing expression really nicely.

Shanesart lovely lines with those sketches and I really like the expression the demon has, he looks like a real mischief maker.

kboss lovely start you’ve got there with that master copy, the colours look to be pretty spot on, keep up the good work!

Iman121
a solid start… you might find it easier putting a layer of colour in the background, something like a very dark or mid grey, it makes colour visualising a lot easier. Also a bigger brush would eliminate the need for the back and forth look there is to your brush strokes at the minute, and would give the figures mass and weight, rather than just line… you can always get the small brushes out once your basic shapes and colours are in!

mercuralis I love the subject matter and the pose, right up my alley! The woman’s skin tones seem a little on the grey side at the moment, perhaps a little more saturation in some key areas like shoulders, elbows and her face would really liven her up and give her some angelic glow!

Debbie lovely start, you’re stuff’s coming on in leaps and bounds. Love the delicate pencil work, and having seen your last piece, can’t wait to see where you go with the lighting.

#153

chipmasque, hehe, thanks! Yeah I think this is looking a bit medieval but I’m kind of liking it even if it isn’t totally intentional.

Really love the direction in which yours is heading. Would possibly like to see a bit more contrast, and am highly curious to see how you complete the piece. Love the ambition of the project!

Zeph, thanks so much! Always great to have your participation here. I’ve no doubt your piece will turn out great!

An update on mine, trying to make it slightly less dragonlike, though I like the oddness of it so far - it’s missing ears and a leg, but hey:

#154

hi, Zephyri. thanks for your comments, i’m pleased you’re enjoying my spin-off. the spheres may look easy (that’s always someting to strive for) but they’re the reason i stalled before i wanted to. by contrast, the fan figures were a breeze, taking about 1/10 the time of the spheres!

i have a suggestion for your angel’s halo, based on my memories of religious art as a kid. they always seemed to be perched over the rear of the crown of the head, a bit like a disembodied hat brim:

just an idea, if it works in your composition, which is very appealing. i like how the devilish one seems to be pushing at the angel.

edit @ Rebecca: yep, contrast needs some love, also fine tuning the balance between the hues. i almost always adjust final contrast and hue structure after the pic is painted, and often during the painting, it allows me to use a fairly limited palette to start, and focus on brushstrokes and edges, which i need to muscle up. could never do that in traditional media, but it’s part of my process in digital.

Quick value study… I fixed the head… not sure what I want the hand to do. I thought about having him holding a pen or maybe pulling on a mustache… still playing with it. Im thinking black background next.

#157

Gord, thanks! Keep pushing yours, glad to see you aboard.

Quick digital update, just a test:

#158

Rebecca, idem means “the same”… (as in the same comment as the one I gave to Glenn)… got a bit carried away there by seeing all this lovely work…

Joel… those lines… wow. One possibility could be letting him point and look to the viewer, like he’s picking his next victim and he’s picking the viewer. Not sure if the effect would be interesting enough though… just an idea… just don’t make him pick his nose ok?

Gord great to see you here! :bounce:

Zephyri looks like you’ve got another great one in the making! I’m mostly curious to see it grow…

#159

Hey a freindly ca’er here to post some wip

Hi all! There are some amazing works already posted in this thread. I’m impressed by some the talent on these forums.

This is my first OFDW and I’m quite excited about it. I will be attempting to recreate Rubens’s Two Satyrs. I’ve posted my preliminary drawing here. I still see a lot of things to fix - getting that exact expression of the front-facing Satyr is turning out to be a challenge for me. There are so many subtle shapes that compose that maniachal expression…

Anyway, hope to begin painting in the next day or so.
