#102

No problem. Rebecca is right, I should have asked  I’ll take it down for now.

#103

Thanks for the advice Rebeccak I think that playing with the camera angles is some great advice and I will act out it.

That might mean that it will take a minute or two for another update but I’m sure that it will be well worth it once a good camera angle is established and good references have been found.

#104

Rebecca just reading around here we learn a lot ! Thanks.
Later night will start my post finally lol

Danielh68 - wow - great work, great tips !

Everyone - amazing start, loving to watch it all.

#106

I’m not very good with this concept work, I like to paint or draw what I see before me, but I’m always up for a challenge although this may be my only entry.
Some great work here by the way.
Just a generic Troll/Giant character in pencil and ball point pen.Just playing really.

Hi everyone,

For those struggling to come up with concepts, backgrounds, figure positions, etc., the best way to get inspired is to look at old master artwork, concept artwork, browse through the CGPortfolio here, etc. I am certainly not suggesting that people plagiarize, by no means! But it’s great to look at art all the time to find inspiration, after which you may find the courage to compose your own compositions and throw around ideas without worry that they be initially perfect. The main goal is to get the creative juices flowing and to really stretch your imaginations. There may be more than one figure in your compositions, and they may be man or beast. As well, it may very much help to write down a brief story or description of what you want your scene to show. This gets you past your inhibition of only drawing what you are sure you can draw / are comfortable drawing. Give it your wildest shot, let your imagination really stretch to something as fantastic as the compositions that you see in the official Challenges here on CGTalk.

Looking forward to seeing more dynamic compositions and sketches!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Looking for more dynamics, as Rebecca so wisely suggested.

Inspired by The Combat of Mars and Minerva by Jacques-Louis David

The mad professor being beaten by his own creation…
Still not sure about this all now…argh… the more I try, the less I’m convinced…
Hey Mal-1 your troll looks like he’s hungry and looking around for something to eat  Great sketch

Hello all, my name is Russ Dickerson, and I’m new to the forum. I’ve been away from art for most of this year, I thought this was a good way to get back into it.

Here’s the idea I had, I was going to call it either ā€œrunning of the bullsā€ or ā€œoh crapā€. Any comments would be helpful, thanks in advance.

#111

a little man looking up at him?

A bear that just walked out of the cave, like they share it

any type of animal

a family that was hiking and then see OH SHiiii…

Hi audentiori,

Welcome to cgtalk!

So far it looks like a pretty good idea. I like the camera angle youre working with and I like how youre using your space. Im not really sure if the bulls are really large bulls or minotaur-like creatures. I would suggest just to work out your idea solidly first and get a really good foundation going. I should talk though cause Im pretty stuck now… I know exactly what I want to do but didnt work it out in my sketch so now there are alot of things I need to adjust in my image. Anyhow bro, welcome aboard and I look forward to seeing your progress ! - J

#113

Thanks for the welcome, and for the comments. It’ll be bulls when it’s done, I think the sketch drops off a bit right behind the head so it’s hard to tell. I might change the angle of the car on the left, I was thinking of the bull’s leg coming up over the railing and that’s what’s wiping out the car.

Thanks again!

Russ

Good going everyone. Certainly a lot of enthusiasm showing through. Rebecca thanks for the bunch of inspirational references. I have come up with an idea and will start working on it sometime today.

A lot of cool giants here. Gonna enjoy the finished gallery:)

Here“s my update. Started on some basic colors.

Now that I got my Painter and computer in I am set to go. I will attempt this in digital. Wish me luck.

Hello all,

This is my first post on the CG forum. I stumbled across this workshop yesterday and it really caught my imagination.

This is my initial idea I’m going to probably play around with the angles and positioning but the general idea is of a giant waking up in the middle of a Forest that has grown on and around him.

Happy sketching everyone

Welcome audentiori, and Ronnientes, and WhOoShEz.

audentiori,

One thing I would suggest is enlarging your canvas size and playing with your overall composition. Spatially I think it needs to be worked out where the person and the ledge on which he is standing needs to be worked out ~ I would draw the ghost outline of where the bulls’ bodies are, their legs, etc. so that you can determine the ground plane, the perspective etc. and find out how to place everything in space. But I like the skewed / cut off composition, I would only suggest enlarging your canvas so that you know where everything is really placed in space.

Ronnientes,

Welcome to the forum, and I hope to see more of your experimentation. Perhaps it would be good to sketch what the larger background would be, and not think about the specifics of the character, just the overall composition, and perhaps write a bit of a description / story to explain who the giant is and why he is waking up. This can go a long way toward helping determine the details of the giant in the long run.

WhOoShEz,

I am not sure I understand what is going on in your piece yet. Can you tell us what is happening and what you are trying to describe?

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Thanks for the advice! I have a habit of creating what you can see, and not completing the rest of the image that would be hidden. It’s a good idea, it’s something I’ll work on. It’s akin to following through with your swing in baseball, but it’s one of those ingrained habits.

I think enlarging the canvas is a good idea, I was thinking of widening it to the left. I like the cut off on the right, and widening to the left will allow more room so that the bottom’s not so compressed. The bottom started out with one idea of camera angle, but the angle changed with the bulls and I think working that part over will definitely help. It should leave a bit more ā€œless detailedā€ room to the left, helping the character stand out more.

Thanks for the comments!
