just to clarify the whole desaturate vs. grayscale …

Desaturate will create an average of the R, G and B channels and sens each channel at an
equal number doesn’t reside on the same spot on a value range this offcause wont work :).

I find that a good technique is to create a layer on top of all your other ones, fill it whit any gray color and set the blendmode to color. You’ll get an accurate depiction of your values and all the property of a layer, so you can quickly switch it on and off to see you values, and then go back to painting whit color. And you wont have to strip you color information like you would whit grayscale.

I should really stop mocking around playing tek-head and get back to painting.

Hi gang! Some really good and interesting paintings going on here. As always!

Thanks for the points on my painting… Had to look the word up Rebeccak (the clecavle…-thing), but now I know what to work on more  And I so agree with you on the face. I´ll try to bring some more depth and dimension in it. Later.

One question when it comes to the B/W-underpainting a lot of you guys are doing… In what program are you working? I´ve tried the technique in Painter and can´t get a hold of it. I don´t feel that the different layer-options give me good enough result :frowning: How are you doing it? As you know I work in color from the beginning, or leave the painting in black/white…

Amerasu - I really like your style. I´m in awe of the face, and hands. Good work!

Glenn,

LOL, thanks.

SaraD,

Hey there! I’ve not tried the method in Painter, as I primarily use Photoshop. I think there are blending modes in Painter, but Glenn / Spirit Dreamer is the best person to field any Painter questions.

Of course, one thing you could try would be to bring the Painter file into Photoshop, and add the blending mode layers there.

Stahlberg’s tutorial is really great:

Regarding anything I say that is wrong / stupid, you guys need to call me out on it more often. ~ I’m not offended, it helps!

as regards the value-desaturate-approach-to-painting discussion:

I find this debate exemplary for the focused and factual yet at the same time passionate and open-hearted style this forum maintains.

You might not be aware of it, but for me as a beginner to see the pros discuss their approaches is really valuable (no pun intended) information.

Oh, man this means much to me, as you might not be aware of the fact that I took your work (among others) as a quality guide for my work in the OFDW - so thank you.

As concerns the likeness - I followed the hints Glenn posted in OFDW007. I haven’t got to the same level Amerasu has reached (really great Amerasu), so if I feel bold enough I might go back to the face again when I am finished with the rest of the painting

Nice work everyone.
Too bad that I did not join this one.
How did I miss this.:banghead:

#168

I started on another pose and wow, this position is tough!! I can’t count the number of times I’ve erased, smudged or adjusted lines, arms, feets, legs and head. I’m still not totally on but I’ll keep working at it.

I thought I’d go black & white and then colour after, something I never do. I always start right in colour so this will be new to me. I read the colouring/painting tutorial pasted somewhere on this thread and will give that a whirl, see how it goes.

Thanks for comments on previous painting

Hi SaraD…A good and easy way to turn your colored painting into a black and white
halftone, to check out your values ect. useing PAINTER…
Go to EFFECTS top of screen…select…menu comes up…select SURFACE CONTROL on that
menu, then another menu comes up…select EXPRESS TEXTURE on that menu…
Now slide middle bar that says…GRAIN… all the way to the left…
Adjust top bar…GREY THESHOLD, and CONTRAST bottom bar, until your picture comes
into focus…you can move your picture around in the view box, by holding your pen
down on it.
When you get your picture in focus, save it as a different number or version, and press OK…
That way you won’t loose your colored version.
Hope this helps you out some…if you have any problems with it , let me know.
By the way, I really like the way you get the female skin to look so soft and beautiful…

Glenn

wow amerasu,
such a great likeness again and so quick! Great feel of balance on this difficult pose!

It’s about time that I pulled it all together. So this is my starting point for the finishing refinements.

I am having a hard time using artrage’s blending pallette knife as it is much bigger than the smallest brush even when set to 1%. I will have to blend some details with the smallest brush itself. This process will give it some texture, so it might not be bad after all.

All in all I can say I am so grateful for the hint I got in one of the last OFDWs to use artrage. Been a great experience…

#171

MR MU…Strongest work I have seen from you yet, a lot of nice things happening in it…
GREAT FACE also…

I’m going to call this done. My colouring after the fact looked terrible. I don’t even want to post it. I think I’ll stick to colouring my normal way

Here’s my stages, though I forgot to save the initial sketch.

Mr. Mu Thank you! And I admire your painting in Artrage! I really like that program but I’m just not very good with it. I’m so used to the easiness of Photoshop that I find it difficult to paint digitally without layers and undo’s. I can’t blend like I want to. Anyway, I think your face is beautiful! The lighting is especially nice. It’s a fantastic photo for facial lighting and you’re definitely doing it justice. Nice work

Spirit Dreamer As usual, great work! I really love your “painterly” style. It’s something I aspire to as I tend to totally over-render sometimes. I like the way you always put different poses together. It’s all very artistic and soft

drawMonger Looking very strong so far! I like the way you’ve upped the brightness so her whole body is visible. Her face looks excellent already and her proportations seem right on. Good stuff!

Marco J Nice work for 40 minutes! It looks like you have a good start with the black and white values so it will be nice to see it finished.

SaraD Beautiful! You’re so detailed and smooth with your painting! She looks so soft and creamy with that gorgeous skin. Excellent job with the lighting too

sturmkim Good start! I like the pastel look you have going on and I think you have a nice beginning. Looking forward to seeing it completed.

Mr. Mu,

Soooo impressed!!! :applause: Keep up the excellent work!

Amerasu,

Nice work! Looking forward to your update! :wavey:

A little update from me…

Morning people :wavey:

Mr Mu -> great progress with this piece… you can be proud… it’s very good… very effective style…

Amerasu -> congratulations for your latest pic…grey appear very good for her… maybe a background soon ?

Beckie -> your sweet-soft-smooth-style… I’m always a fan of your art… beautiful work… of course… we ask for more :buttrock:

#175

Rebecca, simply fantastic! I love the shading and hues!

Great progress MU!

Here is a colored update.

Did some picking here and there  A new “finished” painting :scream:
I think I leave this one now. You can always go back and find things that´s not perfect, but you have to draw the line to yourself, and I do that now :banghead:

And SpiritDreamer - thanks for the tip, but that´s not really what I´m after. I want to find a good technique to paint a black and white underpainting and then colorize it without getting a greyish, dirty color. I´ve tried the different layeroptions in Painter, but can´t find the best way to do. A main problem for me, who uses brushes that blend, is that I either have to “Pick up underlying colour” OR get a white color for the blended edges. In Phostoshop you can smudge, for example, with transparency in the smudged areas. Is there a way of doing that in Painter? Do you get what I´m after or am I to blurry :argh: It´s hard to explain…

Lolo,

Thanks!! Great to see you here on the weekend! :arteest:

Vidar3d,

Thank you! I’ve a long way to go on this piece…missing last weekend due to travel hasn’t helped my cause, but that’s just my silly excuse! :scream:

I am hugely impressed with your piece ~ you’re improving at a great rate, and learning a lot, I think, from the tremendous talent pool here.

Minor crits would be to work a bit on the clavicles (they look a bit thin / frail for her build) and the feet. Marvelous progress ~ keep going! :wip:

SaraD,

I think this pose looks much more natural, and I like your adjustments with the clavicle, leg.

Again, I don’t know Painter, but it may be worthwhile to try to just bring the Painter piece into PS and do the blending modes there. Just a suggestion, of course.

Everyone’s doing really great work! Very inspiring guys!! :arteest:

Cheers,

Hi Amerasu
Your rendering was so beautiful I couldn’t resist putting some color in it using Painter.
Hope you are not offended or anything. Only spent about 10 minutes on it.
Can be taken alot further color-wise I am sure.

SaraD:
I rarely use blenders. Just colored brush strokes and filters or effects.
Don’t know if this tutorial will be of any help to you.

Here ia a link to a tutorial I did on the “Beginner’s Lounge”:
Painting Tutorial

I never paint over gray scale underpainting. But I can get color in an image
like I just did on Amerasu’s piece by using effects only. You might try going that route
and then putting a layer on top and try painting your colors on the top layer.
I don’t think you’ll get “mud” that way. But I am not sure…Try it anyway.

If all your shadows and rendering are correct in gray scale, you should not have
to use any “blenders” to put color in. That would be the wrong “tool”.
You should be able to just tint it like Rembradt did his paintings.
(with digital you can use filters and effects to achieve the same outcome)

Glenn

Spirit Dreamer, No… I don’t mind at all! I think she looks pretty good in the gold tones

I’m with you though, I’ll stick to my coloured brush strokes for the most part when I want a colour painting. Colouring on gray scale didn’t go well for me. I’m sure that’s because I don’t have a clue what I’m doing!! I can blend, shade, overlay, multiply, etc. forever but it still doesn’t look natural to me. I’ve seen some amazing results of people painting over grayscale but I can’t manage it yet.

#180

SpiritDreamer and Rebeccak - I´ll try your different techniques and see what I can do with them.

Just to clarify about blenders - I don´t use the blendertools, but I use brushes with low opacity and resaturation. Maybe the “real” blender tools works differently. Gonna try those
