A WIP. I’m working down the body, right now i’m around the stomach area right now. Her face looks old! I need to go back and work on that… and probably a hundred other things.

#183

jinnseng,

Great to have you join us!

I agree that the face looks a bit old atm, but I think that’s easily fixed by removing the heavy facial crease running alongside her nose, cheek, and mouth.

The torso and left shoulder are looking quite good ~ keep going, I’m sure you will get there! :wip:

Cheers,

jinnseng - unique look and great values… looking forward to your progress

Everybody!
Thanks so much for your appreciation and warm comments. You know, I just started last year and I think I will remember the support and open-hearted help I received here on my struggle to learn drawing/painting even in years from now on.

Yeah, my journey has just begun!:buttrock:

Alas, I do understand how someone on this forums said art is never finished, only abandoned… I can’t look at it no longer. So, unless someone points out something that I simply cannot leave like this I call this finished.

tried to colorize it using the gimp and a color layer. I used desaturated tones for the light/exposed parts and rather saturated colors for the shades.
Rebecca, in stahlbergs tutorial he mentions his skin shading tutorial for further details, but I don’t know where that is… How do I decide which tones to use on which parts in order to not make it look like metal (as stahlberg warns):

don’t we all just love animations?

Pingulord, my apologies, didn’t see your post before! Welcome to CGTalk, and to the Anatomy Forum! We’re glad to have you aboard. Would you like to tell us something about yourself, your background, and your training? This always helps.

Even though technically this piece is for another OFDW, it’s fine with me if you post here, as you will be more likely to get group feedback that way. However, typically, we try to post work to the Workshops that uses Reference from that particular OFDW. But no worries.

You’ve got a nice start here ~ I look forward to seeing your update!

Mr. Mu, I would say to focus on black and white at this point, and not worry about color. I think the main thing I would say to continue to work on would be her hand, as she seems to have exceedingly long fingers. Apart from that, I must congratulate you on coming such a long way in such a short amount of time! :wip:

Note that in the Painting Tutorial, Steven says:

When you’ve taken this as far as it can go, start using brushes in ‘Normal’ mode. (Again I use round hardedged brushes, with pressure sensitive opacity mostly, occasionally Airbrush or texture brushes.) You’ll know when it’s reached that stage, you can feel it - the point of sharply diminishing return. It gets harder and harder to see what you’re doing with these modes, since they’re very transparent and subtle. For the next level of subtlety it’s best to use straight Normal mode. But if the preceding stage of colorization has gotten you close enough, you won’t need to cover all of the image with 100% opacity, you can focus on some areas, which makes it easier.

Now is also the time when I enlarge the image to it’s final resolution, to get all the detailing done with the opaque paint.

There is included on his page a Skin Shading Tutorial, but it’s for 3D ~ haven’t read it, you may wish to to see if it contains any applicable 2D bits of information.

The painting tutorial is here:

All of Steven’s tutorials are here:

Hope this helps!

oh well, I overlooked this. I would mess up completely using normal mode, that is for sure. I will remain monochromatic, then.

Don’t think I am not listening to your repeated advice about this, it is just that I long for being able to use colour one day and I also wonder what the steps for my transition or expanding will be.

Cause I am absolutely clueless about this, at the time being. I have read about color theory , but it is so much information I just can’t figure out an ordered or tidy approach to it. I have read about primary, secondary and tertiary colors, I kept in mind that colors saturate in strong light, except when you deal with skin, I read about subsurface scattering and color pallettes - yet after all it seems that I am still missing that one decisive hint for a first step into the world of colour…

sigh

Maybe I am just impatient.

I will stick to monochrome until I figured this out…:wip:

Mr. Mu,

There is total honor in taking things one step at a time. There is a color thread somewhere hereabouts…why not take a simple image, like a landscape (no figure) and try to reproduce it digitally? I can help you out. Best to separate out the color exercises initially from the overall more complex problem of figure + color.

Thanks Rebecca… and sorry for the wrong posting. I heavnt looked trough most of the works since Ive got only 56k DialUp… T__T

Ohhh well… about my backgroud… Im from Germany and still in school right now. And my training… well… just looking at every possible thing around me. ^^ Learned the basics of drawing heads years before and learned from my own since then.
I usually draw the classical way with pencils and coal but digital art is cheaper because you dont have to buy colors and good brushes all the time… -.-
I dont really know what to say anymore, besides a big sry for my bad english and please ask anything if you want to.

@Jinseng: I think you should be able to fix the face quite easy… just “pull” her cheak up a little bit. And I think her right shoulder looks kinda odd… you should propably render it a bit smoother. ^^ Still thats some great work youve got there… XD

#190

hope i’m not always the last one to post his work on these threads

#191

#192

Mr. Mu,

Icey,

As always, your drawings are beautiful…I think I had mentioned that you would really like Ingres (pronounced sort of like ahn~gruh) before, you should really look at his work!

Icey, have you ever done any Master Copies from Prud'hon, or from others? :)

EDIT: Also, I think you would quite enjoy this book:

“The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing” by Anthony Ryder (artist).
As written in the BOOKS thread: it’s an excellent book, and not too expensive. The artist is a traditional artist working in pencil ~ his work is HIGHLY realistic and beautiful.

yes! ofcourse  but quite a wile ago… my studys aren’t that good…

and this - with the angel wings - a total mess

Icey,

Wow, these really attest to the power and purpose of doing Master Studies ~ the discipline really shows in your own work! It would be terrific to see more studies like these ~ you should really start your own Anatomy Thread ~ Anatomy Thread of Icey ~ and post these as well as your other works there as well.

It looks like the main thing you struggle with in these copies is the lower leg and foot ~ perhaps some studies of just these areas might help? Just a thought.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#197

hehe - maby i will start that thread

it;s not much to show, but… it wown’t do no harm  I do have certain problems and areas i’m strugleing with , but i’m fighting with them! We’ll see who wins the fight in the end

cheers!

Icey

#198

This one is finish now…

…I’ve tried something different of my usual style… hope you like…

#199

This is about 3-4 hours progress. I was going to colour it but I see that OFDW 11 is up and running so I am going to leave this as it is for now. I may come back to it later.

Marco J,

WOW, fantastic work so far! :applause:

The only thing I notice is that her head may be slightly too large / luminous for her body ~ but that’s an easy fix if you ever wanted to tweak that.

Great work! Look forward to your participation in OFDW 011!

Cheers,
