I don’t know why a lot of people today are misusing the term “matte painting.” Do you guys actually know what matte paintings are for? If your image is not being used as a production background image for a movie, TV show, video game, etc, then it is not a matte painting. Just call it a painting or illustration.

As for the painting itself, the foreground silhouettes don’t seem to add anything to the composition. They don’t anchor your composition in any way that’s interesting, and being so dark and creating such a strong contrast also doesn’t do anything. Whenever you want to accentuate contrast by showing silhouettes, you want the silhouettes to to important and carry important meaning, or at least anchor your composition in such a way that the overall visual design they form is compelling.
Yeah you’re right, I tend to use the term matte painting whenever I make something out of photos - 3D and painting, because I tend to think that painting and illustration convey too much a sens of digital painting. But well I guess illustration would be the most suited term here =) And yeah I know what matte paintings are for thanks ^^
As for my illustration I hesitated for a long time before adding this foreground element. Whithout it, the illustration seemed too “far away” from the viewer, but the fact that I added it at the end and that I didn’t make enough concepting before making this illustration explains the fact that it’s not adding that much to the composition.
But well that makes me aware how concepting is important. I’m trying to spend more and more time at the beginning really trying to get a strong composition on a small thumbnail rather than going right away with the 3D and painting and stuff.
Thanks for the comments !
