Ocean scene Final touches

In need of some direction here. this is the scene I have been working on

It is a spherical matte painting projected on to simple geometry. That is why the ocean shader is cutting in to the cliff in a nasty way. This is my first major maya project so I am at a loss as to how to fix this. Preferably, I would like to figure out a way to sell the illusion without having to bluntly model out the polygonal details (I am very inexperienced with mayas modeling tools still). I have tried displacement, but can’t seem to get that to work with the surface shader projecting the painting.
