Number of Pixels in a selection

#1

Hi i am wondering if it is possible to get a read out of the number of pixels with in a selection (not square) that may be i would do with a wand or something.

For instance if you took a render of a teapot and then selected the handle and spout in Photoshop… out of the total, 1000 x 1000 or whatever, how many are in the selection.

I saw there is an info read out burried in PS but its way innaccurate. It seemed to deel with stuff like RGB etc… and would read out large numbers for small selections relativly to other larger selections etc… I couldn’t seem to get it to work properly.

It would be of much help
Thanks!

Not that I know of.

Not sure how should that work, anyway… e.g., what if it’s feathered selection? Do those pixels count as half then?

Yeah i was thinking of that. I’d just say 100%. It doesn’t have to be perfect in my case.

In the end i would just like to know about the percentage that something is taking up the space. So like in the case of the teapot. What percentage is the teapot taking up, like if the teapot is just stark sharp edge blue and the area around it is back. The feathered thing i’m not too worried about, if i had to convert the image to something to do this i’m cool with that. Just so long as its somewhat accurate.

What about those analytical tools that come with CS3 and up… I think it’s only in the extended version. Honestly I’ve never looked into them, but this sounds like something they might be used for.

Found it!

Make a selection and in the analysis menu check “Record measurements”. In the window below you can then check the area and a whole lot of other data. Seems to work in my quick test.

here’s a very good way for us control freaks

klingspor: I’m still playing with this, but it could be it!! Thanks man! i’ll keep playing with it…so far so good though. Thanks man!

Creeto: Thats what i was refereing to on the thing that doesn’t really work well. open up a semo complex image, like some camo… make a few wand selections or just one. look at the info. then pick something smaller, then bigger…

compair the numbers, a lot are off. I sanity checked it with a co worker going through the options and making selections. We both concluded that it wasn’t making enough sense to use it for what we would like to use it for.
