NUKE to After Effects (frames dropping)

#1

Hello,

I’m having issues regarding choppy output (frames being dropped) from AfterEffects CS4.

I’ve rendered my reel out from NUKE using the following settings:
resolution is 720x405
file type: tiff
data type: 16bit
compression: none

Total size image sequence output from NUKE is … 3.86GB …1-2372 images.

In AfterEffects CS4, I just put it together and add some audio, create a render queue:
Output Module>Format>Quicktime Movie
Output Module>Video Output>Animation (quality: best)
Output Module>Audio Output> Best

Frames are dropping like crazy.
Is this due to the massive 3.86 GB image sequence?

Should I render out of nuke with at least some compression?
I just want to avoid image degradation at all cost…

Please advise on a suitable compression that will not harm my sequence too much out of NUKE if this is indeed the solution.

Thank You

Are the frames missing within AE or is the rendered lossless quick time movie not playing back in real time?
I suspect the latter and if so, it is just a hardware issue. Only expect very high end machines to play back uncompressed material in real time.
Just to check if AE rendered out correctly, try compressing your qt using mpeg streamclip to mp4 or something similar and see how it plays back.

Depends what the use is for… Is this a master or a render for people to play back etc.
Is it going into a NLE or say for… youtube?

evanfotis, thanks for responding…

Just to be clear, NUKE output is beautiful and not the problem. FrameCycler plays the sequence flawlessly.

Frame dropping occurs only in AfterEffects output.
Yes, the output will be for online viewing but not youtube quality. Just to show my reel to potential employers.

I’ll try the H264 and see how the compression looks as well as if frame dropping occurs.

Thanks,

Found the problem,

My workstation is partitioned (Drive: C, Drive: D)

Drive: D is the lesser of the two regarding space and possibly some form of RAM allocation.

Drive: C is the workhorse (3.25 GB RAM, 2.99GHz, Dual Xeon @ 3.00Ghz, 270GB capacity)

Frame dropping was occurring when I save the .mov to drive D.

Simply saved it to drive “C”, smooth like Megan Fox

I’ll proceed hopefully without issue…

Thank U
