Nuke in Fumefx

I’m pretty good at fumefx, but how does everyone create a nuke? The rolling cloud at the top is perfect.

did you do that?

not sure if that is fume. I would guess it’s afterburn or pyrocluster. the problem with fume is that the fire burns out way to fast.
a nuke is a huge explosion. it moves super slow (in camera space). that fore you either would have to make the spacing in fume extremely small which would give you slow sims or probably run out of ram, or you would have to turn down the timescale which would make you lose all the detail.

now, there are tricks of course. one is to go high timescale in the beginning, and then animate it down so the cloud rolls very slow, but still keeps some detail from the high timescale in the beginning.

to help the fire keep burinng in the center, you could born particles on the fly that emit fuel, so there is this heat center that makes it move up.

personally I would go with a mix of afterburn and fume. afterburn gives you really nice plume style smokes that role around itself. you can use fume to give some fluid motion around those smokes to make it look more believable.

No, I didn’t do that one, maybe it was made with afterburn and fume? I should try that out, but how can I attach afterburn to g along with fume?

i make a litle mushroomlike cloud with fume

try afterburn’s sticky particles on an animated torus primitive. You would animate the twist of it. Thats how andy murdock did his on his LoR dvd.
