nParticle instancing MR render issues

Greetings

Having a bit of trouble getting this right:
I’m using 2011
I have an object that I’ve imported, I’ve assigned a mia material to it, and it also has alpha maps using the “cut-off opacity”. I’ve instanced this object to nParticles (coz i think they render better, not sure), and they appear semi OK with some minor alpha map issues (which isn’t on the original object), I’m assuming this is an nParticle glitch, however this is not my issue.

My issue is that everything appears OK, however if I render the instances from behind a pane of glass, they disappear. The original object also disappears, however if I turn “visible” and “trace” to ‘Yes’ for the object in the mental ray flags settings, the original object then becomes visible through the glass, however the instances still do not appear.

Should I be converting the nparticle instances to polygons? or is this not going to slow down my scene and render time, especially with many instances. Is there a better way to instance?
