Lemog,

Hahahahahaha!!! Are you mocking my lack of progress?? Ok, fine. :scream:

b2dermawan,
Beautiful piece!!! The only thing I would say would be that the face looks a bit flat in comparison with the rest of her figure, which is really beautifully realized (including the legs, lol!) But if you wish to stop at this point, of course I understand. Great work!!!

Queensoul,

I hope everything is ok with your husband, let us know! OFDW 003 will be posted tomorrow or Monday, stay tuned! Oh, and I haven’t forgotten about you

Spirit Dreamer,

Looking really great!!! Thank you for all of your hard work and input into everyone’s pieces. If you are having trouble with the face (and it looks like you’ve made a lot of great progress with it so far!) I would just suggest rotating the canvas 90 degrees clockwise as well as the reference, and working on things that way for a while. This definitely helps!

Beautiful, warm colors, and it will be really cool to see you incorporate a nice bkgrd! Can’t wait to see updates!

Great work, guys!!! Definitely keep it up!

Cheers, :)

Hi guys, here’s what I’ve done so far with the first model. Done with painter. Lunatique’s Opaque round brushes, cover pencil and basic round brushes.

Hi Samanthie

Wrote down a note to you the other day, got busy on my painting and never sent it. It was on your eye with the glasses in the “evocative” section. I’ve always used the eye in similar ways as a symbol of the Great Spirit. When you put your eye-glass in front of it, gave it a whole new dimension. Like the Great Spirit is in you personally. Which of course it is. Thought it was a fabulous concept. Never saw it depicted so simply before. Great idea and beautifully executed.
As for your new figure, been watching its progress all aong. It’s come a long ways and ended up being one of the most beautiful pieces in this exercise. Adding the crisper edges and keeping the softness inside, really works nicely. Don’t forget how you did it. Very distict and beautiful style developing there.
Congratulations:bounce:
And take care
Glenn

Queensoul,

WOW!!! Just saw your image, and I have to say that I am sooooo impressed by this!! :bounce:

The expression in the face is fantastic, and I really like the wispy, exaggerated smoothness you’ve created in the pose. Great job so far!!

I think you might want to enlarge your canvas on the left to accomodate the full stretch of the lower leg. Other than that, I would just recommend emphasizing and concentrating on those values ~ remembering to continually build your drawing through values as you go along.

If you perhaps go a bit darker in the bkgrd and in the midtone and dark shadows of the figure, you will have more value range to play with. Be careful about using pure white for highlights ~ try putting only your brightest brights in a few select places, and using a range of light grays / highlight tones for the other highlighted areas. It is frequently surprising how ‘dark’ ‘highlighted’ areas can be.
Great work so far QS, and I eagerly anticipate your progress!! :bounce:

Spirit Dreamer,

Great comments, and Samanthie is putting together a beautiful tutorial as we speak!

Cheers,

Queensoul: looks very nice! really getting the flow from your bg. and ack:argh:! was going to say to expand your canvass a bit too, but apparently has been taken care of by rebeccak (damn, one of these days i shall bit rebeccak in typing speed! hahaha - shall take that “hypertrust typing turorials” afterall, watch out rebeccak). keep updating!

Spirit Dreamer: inspiring stuff, reminds me of a certain spirit in my county’s folk lore. and great to see you taking the fig to the next level. my 2-cents, if u don’t mind, is not to get caught up w/ the current lighting sources. in ref, lighting sources come from studio’s lights directing to emphasize the full figure of the body. in outdoors, it’s quite unlikely we’ll get the same strong and full directed lightings. so i’d suggest to pick up a main lighting source, follow-through it on rendering the body (and bg), play more on enviromental lighting effects (such you’ve applied to her hair), gives the viewer an idea or imagination on what those source of lightings are(optional), and add more perspective depths (far and close objects perhaps). overall is to give the main char a sense of natural belonging in the pic. hope my rumbling is making any senses. again, really admire your technique and looking forward for more of your updates.

samanthie: thanks, really appreciate it!

rebeccak: nice consolation! hahaha but i gues i’ll buy it afterall lol. no really, i truelly appreciate you great inputs, help me a lot to see my mistakes and learn from them. so keep’em coming please.

Queensoul
Very lovely and elegant so far. There is almost the feeling that she is tossing her hair.

Spirit Dreamer, Thank you for your wonderful comments on my eye image. I haven’t visited that thread in a while. I am on page three of the figure tutorial. Hope to have it done soon.

B2dermawan
will be interesting to see your painting in greyscale. I’ll have to give that a try sometime.

editCrassisco
Sorry to have missed your posts. Great start and a nice sketch too.

b2dermawan,

Nice work so far, just be careful not to go TOO light on the figure from the get-go ~ you want to gradually build lights from a mid~gray, and reserve your lightest lights only for the brightest highlights. Additionally I would recommend filling in the entire bkgrd with a solid tone, be it dark gray or black, until the drawing of the figure is more resolved.

Good luck with this, and looking forward to seeing your update!

Cheers!

i really love this one rebecca
i think it looks completely fantastic and i envy your drawing and painting knowledge
 absolutely beautiful
i’m in love with the way you rendered her
 its almost depressing
 good work

#354

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I dont know why I was being so stingy with the canvas real estate.
Not like you pay per sq feet for it. :stuck_out_tongue: To tell you the truth I am a bit afraid of negative space.

Becca, I agree its time to lay this puppy to rest! Beautiful rendition. Do you intend to color it?
I am hoping you’ll say heck no!

Samanthie that piece you have is incredibly gorgeous!
I am so jealous

Lemog, did I just read that you paint in 8000 pixels?
What kind of machine do you use? I sure would love to paint in that high a resolution to help me
work with more details; Already when I try to paint at 3000 pixels my photoshop takes a million years to update each stroke.

#355

b2dermawan. Nice work so far, the figure feels well positioned within the space. I love the broad painterly brushstrokes.

Crassisco. Not bad in terms of overall proportion. Watch the really strong outline, you have given the figure. It’s really too even. try to vary its weight. For example, make the line stronger and heavier, where the figure is in shadow. Thinner and lighter, where the figure is highlighted.

The face seems very flat, and the features too strongly delineated. You will get a better idea of the face, if you turn the picture on its side. See rebeccak’s post. Try not to get to bogged down with the features. Don’t draw the outlines of lips, a little shade will do. You’re doing well, keep going and look at other peoples drawings, to see how they solve the problems of drawing faces.

Rebaccak. Well done for finding the time to continue with this. The face, the arms and especially the right hand are absolutely beautifully resolved. Bring the near leg and foot to that level and the picture is complete. The thigh looks a little thin to me.

I decided to have a crack at the first pose today. A pencil drawing, because I’m too slow with Photoshop, and wanted to try both before the next figures arrive.

Hi b2dermawan
Thanks for the good advice. Experimented with it a little this morning. Cast shadows etc.
Trying to make figure fit in landscape better. Overlapping shapes to create more depth.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Glenn

Hi Samanthie
Wise woman: what she is thinking
(evocative section)
The eye furthest from the viewer sees the inquisition where 7 or 8 million wise women were tortured and murdered for the same reasons the Taliban are doing it today. Power Ignorance Fear. The eye closest to the viewer reflects the ancient wisdom passed on since pre history when women were the keepers of the secrets of nature, the healers, the spiritualists, the possessors of the secrets and magic that is life. She symbolizes to me that spirit that was and is being extinguished by the male hierarchy.
This is what she is thinking, I think.
Take care
Glenn

theseraphimabove,

Thank you! No need for it to be depressing. I sincerely believe that given patience, time, and effort, almost anyone on the planet can draw and paint to their satisfaction.

Queensoul,

Thanks. I’ll prolly just do some minor corrections, give it a layer with a sienna color set to “color” blending mode, and call it a day.

PSR,

Thank you. I agree, and will definitely try to resolve the front leg especially (and add the other foot) and bkgrd. Thank you for your comments!

I love your drawing. It is very beautiful ~ I can’t wait to see where you go with this or the next one.

Spirit Dreamer,

I really like what you are doing with the bkgrd. Regarding the figure, I think her rib cage has become too bulky for her relatively small pelvis / buttocks. I suggest rotating the image 90 degrees clockwise to check proportions and overall layout of the figure. Remember that the figure is the primary focus of the image, so I would spend most of the time on that ~ but again, the bkgrd looks really fantastic, and I really love your color climate.

Cheers! :)

Spirit Dreamer. No criticisms, really. I like how this has turned out. I think you have a terrific imagination and a flair for symbolism. Do you know the work of Gustav Moreau or Odilon Redon?

http://www.beautyandruin.com/findesiecle/moreau.php

http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/redon/

I took a look at your website and think you have a lot in common with these artists

#359

PSR,

That is a GREAT comment and suggestion. Thanks for posting these excellent links! I took a look at them, and wow, I haven’t looked at these artists’ works in years
I used to have a book called “Symbolism” but it’s somehow gotten misplaced
too bad for me.

Cheers,

@ Rebecca
she is awesome. Love the detail to the underside of the arm and also on face and foot.

@ Spirit Dreamer
Like the changes and enjoy watching this progress. I like moss in the trees.

Thanks for sharing the meaning of your Wise Woman, very enlightening.
