originally posted by Spirit Dreamer: Question - If you are not supposed to use filters then why are they available? Artists have always used the most modern tools at their disposal that is how art has evolved and progressed.

:scream: ROFL, Spirit Dreamer, I hear you. I’m certainly not going to dictate the way in which you paint  but I’m just old~fashioned I guess. Plus, I’ve just had it drilled into me for years the phrase ā€˜the computer can’t do everything for you’ and I’ve heard people talk about being able to recognize certain Photoshop filters in Digital Artwork, which is sort of a no~no. But, you’re using them in a far more sophisticated way than your average user, and you’re certainly not letting the tools do everything for you ~ however, in the beginning stages of your images, the distortion caused by the filters is a bit less interesting (at least to me) than a ā€˜drawn’ line ~ but that’s only my personal feeling.

You’re doing great work, as you know, Spirit Dreamer ~ don’t get me wrong. Your pieces always turn out looking quite realistic, without being over~rendered, which I like. Where I can see the remnants of the filters, I am slightly less enthusiastic ~ but, as I say, it’s a personal opinion, and subjective.

I am starting to use spiritdreamer’s distortion method. It is a great way to corect your proportions if you did not get it right the first time and you can bend tones and move them around to get a rhytm going. I should do another a more realistic looking one to see if I can do it. First I will have to try to warm my fingers cuz it is coooooold! LOL. Fall finally arrived.

Here is my second go at this image. My goal now is to try and ā€œshapen up my paintingā€

1 placed blocked colors and blending…

  1. using Spiritdreamer pixel moving method to correct the image…

Now I must corect things like the hands…

Now I am still working on the image. I will continue to all day long.
Lookin’ for some tips n’ crits.

pushav,

Focus on the painting just in terms of major areas of lights and darks first. Don’t go for details. Work in a very reduced / zoomed out view ~ and just lay in all of the major areas of light and dark that way. You will be amazed at how little it takes for something to ā€˜read’ this way.

Work on the face and mapping out it’s light and dark shapes first.

Keep going. Use fewer filters, and more painting tools.

Cheers,

  1. I am still moving the pixels around and using my custom airbrush and brushy and acrylic smudge. It is fun Rebecca and it makes it easier for a person like me who is not really a painter to ā€œdraw the formsā€ and mold it. Boy did I murder the face. I will correct it later. I am starting to add my own flare to the image.
I may cut of some her hair.

She looks scary =o

#147

Comlock,

I don’t think she looks scary…I quite like the way in which you’ve done the face. Have you ever seen the work of Skip Liepke? I think your sketch style lends itself well to this style of painting. Would you consider attempting a diigital painting in this style?

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#148

Comlicok-Nice work!

  1. I continue to paint and smooth some areas. I also cut some hair off. I guess that I am almost done…

I think that I am getting better at painting. I will have to do this stuff more often.
Crits anyone?

#149

pushav,

Try working on the face in a separate document, if necessary. It takes a lot of work to work up details…try really going for it in a new document, just working on the face.

I think the body independently is not looking bad. But at this point, the face is not yet matching the body.

Cheers,

~Rk

Yeah To me it is a bit small. I think that the problem is that I added too much cheek and it made her look too forward. Oh boy here we go again. more tweaking.

#151

Here we go

5.Like what Becca said her head was not matching the body so I looked at the painting hard and noticed I gave her football player shoulders Lol. I cut some of her shoulders off (I feel like a surgeon Rofl.) I also cut some of her face off and cut off some of the dress and gave here more cleavage like in the photo. I am almost there.:buttrock: Crits. I am on fire.:scream:

#152

hi again

more progress, sorry this is taking so long, busy, busy, busy hehe

#153

Nice work. I wish mine looked as good as yours.

#154

pushav,

You’re making progress…is the mouth a bit too large? I suggest working a bit more in Photoshop, and a bit less in Painter…I think you might be able to get a bit more detail in Photoshop. Try also working on the head separately. There are still a few proportion problems.

enialadam,

Nice work so far…I can understand being busy. Do you plan to do the rest of the body as well?

Cheers,

Lol photoshop. It kinda sucks for painting. Great for comic coloring but bad for painting. Althogh the texturing is easier in the program but I love the pressure sensitivity waaay better in painter. IMHO. Plus I can get better color pulls in painter I like the dullness. As for the lips, I think that she has collagen implants :D. Believe it. Lol I guess I am purely stylized even when I paint. I never have my works look exactly like the references. I dunno why. It just happens. I am special. Muahahaha. Thanks for the crit.

#156

hey I’m back with my own wacom.

I guess this is basically my first attempt at digital painting. So I’m kinda scared.

So yeah, I’m also not quite sure how I’m going to sharpen this up either and blend the values in. So I have a feeling its going to go down hill from here.

Edit: Whoa, sorry for the large image…I will prolly change that.

#157

Nice for your first attempt with a wacom. Now all you need to do is define it a bit more and your will be fine. Keep it up.

#158

Bsmith,

Good to see you back with your wacom! May I suggest you do a value study first? By this, I mean use only black, white, and gray in varying degrees of opacity to establish a gray scale study of the piece (you can also desaturate the Reference photo in Photoshop). For demos on this process, check out the Anatomy Review 3:
Anatomy Review 003: SHADING TUTORIAL AND HUMAN SKULL EXERCISE

I think it’s best to start out with grayscale to build your values.

Also see this tutorial / demo:

TUTORIAL - Digital Figurative Painting from OFDW - by Rebeccak
which describes a similar process.

Don’t worry about making mistakes ~ it’s inevitable. The purpose of this Workshop is to learn, so there’s no need to be concerned about whether or not you are doing the ā€˜right’ thing. The best way to learn is to dive in, and ask questions as you go along.

Cheers,

arrrrrrrrghh,i forgot all about this,ah man i’m gunna have to continue my studies at a later stage

is there a new one tommorow?

#160

Thanks pushav, yours is coming along great!
I paint in photoshop, I’ve used painter a couple of times and thought it was great until I learnt how to do simular techniques in photoshop and now that’s all I use. Do you use a tablet? If you do, setting your opacity to pen pressure in photoshop is a cool technique for painting. Also, Kyena has a great blending tutorial on her website:

Rebecca: Thanks very much  yep, I plan on painting the whole body
