trying to get the values under control

Now OPEN!!! Open Figure Drawing Workshop with Ben Miller, Liang Wang, Rebeccak 005!!
by csgirl: Well…ya. I do alright when I have a photo for reference, especially if its a good one like this. But when I try to make it up (and can’t find any references), I faily pretty badly. I paint mostly women, so I can do them pretty well, but I hardly ever paint men, so I really need to study there. But we learn by doing, right? I hope that by doing enough studies using photos and such, i’ll have an easier time when I don’t have any reference.
Well, happy to have been of help then(and would be willing to help more, however/if I can, BTW). I must say if that was relatively “weak” your “strong” must be quite a sight.
Nice textured lay~in there, drawMonger.
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to render the image while keeping this nice, gestural feel.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
how can i resist such a cute bottom…he he… sorry. Animation Mentor is taking up all my free time but I had some time today on my lunch break… So here it goes. Unfinished but it probably stay that way…

thanks for the photos justmeina…
Great to see you here, 'ziggy!
Hope you will have more time for us on your breaks.
If you get the chance, I hope you finish this ~ a nice, blocked in start!
Cheers,

LOL!
Looks like a reference from my deviantart gallery ![]()
great photos. i want to thank the models and rebecca personally as this is just what i have been looking for to hone my skills and knowledge. the pose i chose to work on yesterday really struck me as ruben-esque, so i decided to try a digital chalk rendering on a toned ground, a la rubens. fyi, i gridded the pic and my ‘canvas’ first and began roughing in (a classic method of speeding the process which really helps with proportion. i am resisting the urge to re-invent the wheel at this point in my life, as i have put productivity on a higher shelf of late). the three stages presented here pretty much represent beginning, middle, and end. done in painter in about 4 1/2 hours, give or take. i intend on frequenting this forum, as my study of the previous threads has led me to see this as very much the equivalent of a cyber-studio life drawing group. thanks for providing such a valuable resource!
Biola is about 15 minutes north on the 5 from Disneyland, in La Mirada. It actually has a great art program. I did take two art classes while I was there: Basic Drawing, and Basic Figure Drawing. I learned a ton, and forgotten a ton. =p
No worries if you don’t want to post a personal Anatomy thread ~ that’s what all of the other zillions of threads here are for!
If you can think of it, we probably have a thread for it ~ just do a search, and you’ll most likely turn up a thread for your desired category.
Well, we’re happy to have you in OFDW 005 ~ it’s exciting to see all of the cool work being posted. I hope that when you have time after the OFDW, you will continue to contribute to the Anatomy forum!
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Well, I would love to post a personal thread, its just a matter of time. Maybe after this week, I’ll have a few extra hours in my day.
And to show you all what I mean about having a hard time with anatomy, here is a sketch from the DSG I did just a week ago…Thor is having some serious anatomy issues. And I even had a reference for part of the picture. =p So yes, I need the practice!
I think I’ll call this finished and move on. I fixed the left hand and foot size so thanks for that feedback, Rebecca.

Jeff Fantastic! I love the style you’ve painted. It just lends itself so well to the pose, I totally agree. Really nice work, very inspiring too
anim_ziggy Looking good so far! Where’s that pose from? I’m wondering if I missed one or there was another added. It’s a cool one and I’d like to give it a go
csgirl I love the black and white and think your painting is really nicely done. You’ve captured the back especially well. I don’t know if you’re going to continue on with this one or call it done but it would look great if you refined it a bit more. But either way, it looks solid already. I like your painterly style too.
zhay13 Very nice for 10 minutes worth! I like the sketchy approach.
Amerasu,
This is looking really fantastic, and I’m super impressed. I can understand your wanting to move on. I still think you could really take this to the next level with some refining on the total figure. The left leg in particular seems just a bit unfinished. But even beyond that, I think that with some extra time, this could become a stellar piece. But, of course, that is up to you.
Great stuff, and it’s fantastic to see your process!
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Ok, you’ve convinced me
I think it could be better too. I’ll come back to it and refine it but first I think I’ll dive into another pic for a bit of a break.
And I’m still working on those feet from 004
I even did some pencil studies of my funny toes.
amerasu, thanks! looking at your piece, i really like the skin tones. the hands and left foot seem really convincing, imo. i would consider a little tweek of the area around the right elbow, keeping in mind something a prof of mine said, namely that there are no concave outlines on a human body, only those that look that way, but on closer inspection are really subtly convex forms. also, maybe look at the s-curve of the spine once more, as it may be a bit too straight in your rendering. very nice progression in any case!
csgirl, i think as a thumbnail that sketch is not too shabby. gesture is great. get a friend to stand in and hone the thing based on the sketch is what i say.
What wonderful pictures and poses. And the look on Liang’s face is so sweet and innocent.
It’ll be a sin if i didnt attempt to do something about this.
sharpens pencil

Not much time to reply, but this is great stuff ~ csgirl, your b/w piece looks great so far, + it’s nice to see your color progression. Will be checkin’ back in later.
Great stuff, guys! I’m inspired!
