Hi Rebecca, thanks for the great feedback…I’m not sure that i can see the problem with the lower right leg…did you mean the left leg which i can see could use some more work?

Spirit Dreamer, congrats on selling your art! Good work on the portrait, i esp. like the way that you’ve rendered the dress.

Yikes!:argh: I’m still working on mine…and I want to sketch all three of them…but we’re already on the 14th page…and I haven’t posted up mine yet…still tweaking…

I’m scared to see the next workshop…I feel so far behind and everyone’s catching up here to me…
drawMonger, Dark3D and Spirit Dreamer:

Excellent anatomy.

Spirit Dreamer: You’re a bit too red on her skin…tone it down there.

As for me I’m going to have to post what I’ve done so far very very soon…I can’t promise it’s going to be tonight…still working on it…so bear with me pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeze:sad:

DrawMonger, no prob! You’re right, the left leg does need additional work…it looks a bit short overall and generally needs refining. With the lower right leg, however, notice how it seems a bit flat, and the foot turned a bit funnily toward the viewer, when the upper right leg indicates that the entire leg is pushing back into space. I think there isn’t enough of an established connection in the ankle area to the mass of the foot, which seems unfinished and wrongly situated. I like the rendering of the whole leg, but think that it needs to be tweaked so that it reads better spatially.

Still like this piece, though, and would love to see you really push it to the finish line!

Loulu,

C’mon, honey, you can make it! We need ya!

Cheers,

~Rebecca

Took an evening off because I’m ill
(Well, not happy for the illness, but it’s nice to do some drawing again!)

I got to this point after a lot of resizing and moving bits around. Finding this pose rather difficult. I could see there’s something wrong, but I’m not entirely sure what it is.

So I resized the original and stuck it in a layer under my drawing - it shows that the left leg isn’t nearly as off as I thought it was, but the head and arms are a bit squint.

I fixed those areas and went on to do some quick and nasty shading. Probably time to break out the colours next, but that’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

Spirit Dreamer,

You know that I’m going to suggest next going in and doing some straight painting. I think you’ve got the basic shapes and attitude really well~established, and now just need to refine details and make everything work together.

Your fabric, particularly in the ridgey area in the second tier of fabric on the left, is looking really great! I like the areas most where I am not thinking about the method which you used, but just forget that it is a painting, and think that it is a dress. This should be the goal ~ you don’t want your viewer to be thinking about which smudge tool you used, you want them to see the object for itself. This is tricky, and I really commend anyone who can do this well.

An artist you might like is Sorolla ~ also, Anders Zorn. These are oil painters whose work shows the artists’ mark, yet you still think less about the mark than the image which is formed by the mark. Definitely take a look at the work of both of these artists.

Cheers,

I hope it’s not too late to post what I’ve been up to lately. I’ve put it off and on…just to do something else. And everytime I come here…well…that just want me to fasten my pace even more.

And no…it’s not finished yet. There’s a lot more work to be done for this sketch (I told you male anatomy is the most challenging one for me). The hands need tweaking and are incomplete…the head needs tweaking…and the skin isn’t done right. Please c&c away.

Loulu,

It’s never too late, glad to see this! I think it’s a bit early to comment on, but one thing to tweak is the proportion of the legs. Hope to see more!

Cheers,

Started putting some colour on under the sketch. This isn’t at all how I usually do coloured pieces - generally I start with the colour a lot earlier and have less sketch there.

Now I started putting colours on top.

Have to switch to a smaller harder brush soon, I think. Right now I’m using a fairly sparse one that doesn’t fully saturate the colours, hence the shadows being a bit muddy.

Kalorlo,

Great to see your work here! This is really starting to come along…the things that I would work on a bit more are the feet, as they will really need to show the pressure and strain of the weight of the pose. Have you seen Zephyri’s leg / foot study? I think this is an excellent way (isolating a particular area to draw exclusively) to practice anatomy.

Looking forward to seeing more progress!

Cheers,

Hi Rebecca
Those artists you just turned me on to…Wow!
Insipred me to do some real painting. It felt great.
Thanks

Lightening up my painting of Liana.
Was getting too orange…like Loulu said.
Thanks Loulu

All the color variations and details that I put in earlier, came back. Great!
Needs the greens and purples to compliment the reds.
Redid the whole dress with oil brush.

The words you just told me really impressed me.
Can’t see the forest for the trees kind of thing.
I tend to get lost in the woods. It’s nice to have you there to show me
the right way out.
You’ve definitely earned your Master’s in my opinion, lady.
Can’t find the words to thank you enough.
So I’ll just say it with paint.

Just did a quick painting of Ben. Only used one big oil brush.
Kept it one size so I wouldn’t get trapped in details at the start.
No filters, smudges or other fancy tricks.
Just straight painting.
It’s easier and more enjoyable, actually.

Thanks again Rebecca.

Yay. The new pose. Good thing we have not started on a 006 yet. Keep going spiritdreamer.

#213

Spirit Dreamer,

Thanks a lot for your comments…and all I have to say about your painting of Liang’s dress is WOW!!! Beautiful stuff. The texture is really perfect, not so much that it’s an exact match to the picture (who cares?) but that it’s a great combination of paint technique and description of the object / fabric. I think the hair needs to be refined a bit, as right now it just seems to have the texture of the brush you’ve used. There is something a bit funny with the shoulders ~ I would check the axes here and the relative size. It comes down to drawing, really. You’re really doing a great job on this piece ~ just keep pushing it technically without losing the spirit of the pose, which you’ve captured quite beautifully.

Cheers,

Hi Rebeca
Worked on her shoulder. One closest to light source.
Was missing that “S” curve from side of neck to edge of shoulder.
Made shoulder muscle more defined with light and shadow.
Next I redefined the hair. Looks better than it did, I think.
When you get a chance let me know what you think.

Probably won’t be posting or replying for a week.
Unless I can figure out how to, Ha Ha.
(but I will be reading your messages and everybody’s posts)
Mrs. Spirit Dreamer is going to San Francisco for a week
to visit her son and daughter-in-law.

Talk to you later and Thanks
Glenn

#215

Wow! This is starting to look real spiritdreamer! Keep on going but don’t over render it.

#216

SpiritDreamer,

This is really coming along! I think the thing you could focus on next is resolving the color competition of the reds of the figure with those of the wall. Right now it’s sort of like ocular overload ~ something needs to be more gray / desaturated / more green to even things out color~wise. I think the shoulders may look a bit too high, as though her neck is too short. I think this may require a bit of tweaking / redrawing, or of just cutting and pasting in Photoshop. The hair is looking better I think. Definitely making improvements! Keep going. I hope Mrs. Spirit Dreamer has a safe and fun trip to San Fran.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#217

Thanks Pushav!
Don’t have to worry about over rendering it. I am keeping all my versions. Just pushing it as far I can.

Rebecca:
I will see what I can do. ANd will see what happens when I do it.

Really great work everyone! There’s some nice painting going on here  I wish I could join you all and finish up the pics I started but I’ve got house guests til late next week and can’t ignore them to paint. I’ll be the late finisher for 005

#219

It’s been a few months since I have been able to do a digital piece. I was kind of lost so I only did a section of Ben.

Thanks for taking a look.

jinnseng,

Beautiful start here ~ the tones are fantastic, and your trademark calmness is evident in this piece…I would recommend just gradually continuing to build values, and if you’re comfortable, later extending this piece to include more of the figure.

Nice work so far…I wouldn’t rush this piece.

Good to see more of your work.

Cheers,
