BSmith,

Wow, quite impressive! I would suggest just enlarging that upraised hand a bit to make it more proportional to the body. You’re doing really great! Keep going!

Cheers,

Zepyhri:
Just sold two of my paintings! A great day for me!:bounce:

Thanks for the nice comments on my work. I’ve still got a whole lot to learn, but I am really enjoying it.

I’ve been admiring your golden winged woman since you started it.
Glad to see you are finishing it.
Beautiful color on her wings.
Would like to see that color reflected on figure and throughout painting.
Subtlely of course.
Would be a unifying element and would give it that oneness.
And would add more beauty to piece.
Reflected on floor might solve that problem also.
Whatever you make above her, make vague and darker to give greater depth to piece, maybe.
These are just some suggestions that come to my mind while I’m admiring your painting.
Keep up the great work it is a pleasure to see it.
Take Care
Glenn

PS Might also try some dark transparent cast shadows with color in them. Would give more realism and drama to piece.

If you haven’t looked at this link:

Definitely do. I think you will really enjoy it. Study his use of color to create drama and beauty with shadows and reflections. Over 300 paintings in his site to learn from. It’s great.

Fantasy at its best. You’ll love it!

Spiritdreamer have you used this one http://vallejo.ural.net/
That is the one I normally use. I think that it has more of his work on it.
I burn a lot of his work on cd. Lol. He needs more new stuff.

ok this is pretty much the final. I kinda took some artistic merit and painted the hand rotated a little bit, its still not great. So its pretty much done unless anyone points something out.

#186

Nice Spiritdreamer! Now I have to continue to build my pitiful portfolio Lol. I wish that my art would sell Lol. I dont have the talent yet.

Bsmith-Keep on going

BSmith,

If you are comfortable with the path tool in Photoshop, I would use it to select your figure only, feather the selection by 1-2 pixels, and copy + merge (Ctrl + Shift + Copy) and paste the merged figure by itself (without the bkgrd) onto a new layer. Then I would rework the bkgrd independently, using a large, soft brush at a low opacity.

If you are unfamiliar with the path tool, just press F1 in Photoshop, and do a search for path tool, and it will tell you everything you need to know. It is much better than the lasso, as it allows you to select objects much as you would in Illustrator, and your selection is much more smooth.

Try this, and post your results.

Cheers,

Hi Rebecca:
And Thank you.
Haven’t put any up for sale in our store or website from this forum yet. Wasn’t sure if it was OK to do so til a couple days ago. But am in the process of doing it now. Or I should say I am asking Mrs Spirit Dreamer to put them on for me. She is not sure if the composites are quite ready for “prime time” (either)…

Here are links to ones I just sold:
SEASHORE WITH GULLS
MOTHER’S LESSON
An American soldier stationed in Saudi Arabia bought them. Computers sure make the world a small place, don’t they?

My stuff has improved considerably since I started participating in this forum, I think.
Thanks to you and everyone else who has helped me. And it will hopefully continue to improve as time goes by. With you and everyone’s help, I hope.
Can’t express it enough how your helping me has improved my work.
(cough cough - and also the ice-cream man Pushav’s new custom brushes! )
And all the effort you’ve put into this forum is great.
Thanks and Take care
Glenn

PUSHAV:
Thanks for the great link! I used to really like his stuff in the 70s. Forgot about him until a couple of weeks ago. Finally remembered his name. Found him on computer and posted link I found. Now I have two links to him. Great! Thanks again.
Glenn

Spirit Dreamer,

Thanks for that! You really bring a lot to this forum, I’m sure you know that. The OFDWs wouldn’t be the same without you!

Really happy that you got the chance to sell your paintings. That’s great news! I wish I had more time to participate in these myself in a drawing / painting manner, but I’m happy as well seeing all of the great work here develop. Great to see!

Cheers,

sh@ke,

Nice piece! My, you’re a multitalented multitasker! :scream:

SaraD,

Really nice work! Great to see your stuff here ~ will you be attempting the entire body?

mabuffaloe,

I must say, you’ve got an outstanding piece going on here! Are you planning to take it further? I must say, I am a total fan of atmospheric figure drawings…bring it on!

DrawMonger,

I love the angst you’ve got going on here ~ it’s perfectly suited to the pose. That right lower leg is a bit wonky though, don’t you think? But the rest of it is really beautiful ~ I love the treatment you’ve given it. Good stuff!!!

Zephyri,

That’s a beautiful leg breakdown! I really wish more people would do these…those careful studies are pretty crucial to getting the larger pose right. Great stuff!!! The way you’ve left the veins as the white of the paper is quite nice. What do you plan to do next?

AMAZING stuff everyone!!! Wish I had more time to stop by more often…you people are awesome!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Thanks for looking

I hope I am not late

I am gonna make Rebeccak say “oh my, not him, nooooo”

I did a 30min work. I think I cheated on this one, I pasted the picture in ps, done a line work then painted. I think my intention was to do a paint work rathar than a line work, but anyway heres both line & colour

do you know, it doesn’t even look like anything, I mean anything clooooser to the pic, poor me
hehe thanks

MWarsame,

Nah, instead, I think I’ll just say, welcome to the OFDWs!

I have to say, I rather like your initial drawing, but I HIGHLY recommend doing a grayscale study for the painting of it. Have you seen the Anatomy Review 003 - Human Skull and Shading Exercise? You should take a look at the Tutorials contained within this Anatomy Review, as it’s all about Grayscale painting, which I would recommend to any beginning painter, digital or traditional.

Right now, you are focused on color, and not getting the major areas of light and dark right. All of the colors in the world will not make a good painting ~ what makes a good painting is VALUE. Value = the range of light to dark between pure white and pure black. In between is an infinite range of grays which you can use to build form.

Try this and see how it goes.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

thanks for the good advice Rebeccak, I’ll defenetly check it out

cheers

Hi Rebecca and Everyone
A little update
Working on dress and lighting today
Dress was starting to compete with figure so I threw it in a shadow
Want focal point to be her face
Trying to achieve this with light
Still alot of refinement to do:
Dress jewelry figure etc
Keeping all my steps along the way
Want to see how far I can push it with light and shadow
Trying to create mood emotion and feeling with color
Take care
Glenn

#199

Hello, well here is my try again! I kind just went a little dank key on this sketch, kind of holloweeni moody.

#200

Spirit Dreamer,

Really like the overall color climate and especially the dress so far. The expression is also well~captured. I would suggest starting to refine the hands a bit and to consider what will go in the upper left hand corner of the canvas. I think there are a lot of really great things you can do with the dress, so long as you don’t overdo it. Take a look at that Sargent painting again…economy of brushstroke etc.

Dark3D,

I like this piece! I still would one day like to see you go for a full~on render, as I think it would be quite interesting to see what you could to. The arms need a bit of work, I think…the face is quite nice, however! Have you ever looked at fashion illustrations of the 1940’s and 50’s? I think you might quite like the quick, gestural style of these. I also think it would be interesting to see what you might do in traditional media, say in pencil or charcoal.

Good stuff!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak
