Normal Map/Texture Help

Hi, I’m attempting to do normal mapping for the first time and followed a couple of CGtutorials, I made a basic AK 47 high + low poly model, done the projection, have my rendered out maps now the problem is in the tutorials they use directX shaders and one specifically uses xoliul shader.

However none of his shaders work for me at all diffuse, spec, normal whatever I put on these will not show up, I have searched and switched to D3d but still nothing.

Now I can get the normal map to show up and work if I simply select it in a standard diffuse, my problem is I want to apply a texture to this as well but cannot find a way to have both normal map and texture applied at the same time.

If there is some way around this or to get the xoliul shader to work would be great. Thanks!
