normal map extraction

#1

How long is it supposed to take to export a normal map. Mudbox 2010 has been at 75% for thirty minutes no matter what settings I use. I end up killing it because it isn’t responding.

2 subdivisions about 62,000 quads

1024x1024
I’ve tried the default search distance and I’ve tried bumping it up to 4.
targa

dual core 4 gigs ram 64 bit

I checked my uv’s they’re not too close to the edges or other shells. There’s no overlapping or flipped uv’s.

#2

you froze that’s for sure…can you extract displacement ?

#3

think some of your shells are to close together…
mudbox needs space to bleed… most of the time bad uvs are causing these problems…

#4

Definitely the case. Some of the shells on the left are almost touching the border. Mud is VERY fussy about UVs. A 1K map at that poly count should only take a few seconds.

#5

I adjusted my uvs’ and I also found I did have some overlapping uv’s. I haven’t tried exporting again, because I can’t do a 2nd subdivision without mudbox crashing.

#6

Have you made sure that your geometry is clean? No rats’ nests(non-welded overlapping verts) or double sided faces ,etc. Bad geometry can also cause all sorts of issues.
