Next Challenge... Lets talk

#41

Huh, i’ve never heard of Layendecker either! A little bit disheartening that he and Rockwell are so close together in style. Love them both though…

#42

id never even heard of rockwell or layendecker, or seen any of their work, before it was brought up here…

i was joking about the photo reference, i recently saw a site where it showed how much he actually changed from the photos he used.

there’s actually a new book that just came out last month I think which is a great look at his way of working with photos:

Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera

#45

I have been checking the dates of Rockwells and Leyendecker’s work. All the Rockwell pieces that I thought seemed so similar to Leyendecker’s were actually painted by Rockwell first so who was mimicing who? :hmm:

They were both amazing.

I would like to change what I said about prefering Rockwell’s work from his middle years. I love it all. Such great characterization and composition. Every one an animated story.

#46

Rockwell actually imitated Leyendecker and apparently asked him, when Leyendecker was already making covers for The Post [that was in 1915] who his business contacts were 'because he didn’t know how to get into this paper… so Leyendecker, who was a good guy, gave him all… Rockwell started copying his style and got the contract soon after. Rockwell was way more competitive and determined to have public success while Leyendecker was more into just creating art, so eventually he was supplanted in the public eye. This is all - I love Rockwell but I really think Leyendecker should be recognized as a great artist as well and nowadays he’s slowly starting to be. Most people, however, never heard of him yet.

Rockwell himself wrote a whole chapter in his biography on how he imitated Layendecker as a young artist - including his behavior as a person.

Hey, I’m always willing to learn. Especially when I like the topic.

#53

At the risk of further derailing the topic, I also say cheers to the MP icon. Love it. Makes me wanna make one with a parrot.

Is Rockwell(-esque) the official next topic, or is that still just speculation?

#54

We will do Norman Rockwell, but first we will do an Ansel Adams tribute.

#55

Yeah!! This will be something totally different for me

#56

Hi everyone, I am new on the forum and I have been following the HMC closely since I stumbled upon it  I would very much like to participate in the next challenge. I look forward to see more great WIP threads and great modelling from everyone and hopefully I can get myself started as well.

And now something completely different. In this post there are 3 new topic suggestions, which you cannot see. lol MP rules!

Sorry, Roberto. I could not resist.
Why not have Monty Pythons as topic of a future challenge? Plenty of stuff to choose from.

Anyways, the Norman Rockwell theme sounds like a cool topic with lots of nostalgia to capture. I'll be watching this one for sure.

   Cheers.
