Next Challenge... Lets talk

#21

Umm I don’t know who Ansel Adams is (I’ll google it after the post) and I’m not sure if ideas are still being thrown around, but I have one I’m going to voice anyway.

Topic: Morbid Christmas

(skeleton santas, demonic elves, mangy depraved looking reindeer, etc…)

 After all it worked pretty well for Tim Burton.

#22

Ansel Adams is magnificent. This’ll be a great change of pace.

#23

Agreed, even though I personally don’t have much interest in environments right now, I’d love to see what others could come up with and learn from their examples / workflow.

#24

Well you are going not to like this one, well I have a idea I have been cooking for an enviroment/fxwars challenge.

It is called: “One World, One City”

#25

COUNT ME IN!

I do think the idea of that photographer and painter is a good one, i think the freedom of our work will be a bit too bound.

#26

Uh, I know you guys have already decided and having never had the courage to participate in one of these, I can’t really say anything, but what about a Disney Character - I loved watching the 80s cartoon series (I used to LOVE He-Man haha) and I’m sure it’ll attract loads of people if you guys do a Disney thing…just a though:)

#27

Might I suggest creating an opinion thread when this challenge gets going? Rockwell can be quite political, and I foresee a lot of opinions flying around within the WIP threads. Might as well just throw all those opinions (they will be inevitable) into one thread. It’ll keep The WIP’s on topic and still give people a chance to try and make everyone else see the world their way

#28

Ansel Adams and Rockwell both sound irresistable. I’m eager for the details now.

#29

Wow like the idea.

I need to work on my environments so for more advance artists out there I would love to see some great WIP’s

#30

I would love to do a Rockwell model. Ansel Adams would be very nice too, but I think it’ll be much harder to finish than any other modelling challenge before… And probably will request good knowledge in others 3d platforms such as 3dsmax, mental ray, vray.

Well, I’m looking forward to see a Rockwell challenge. For me, would be a very nice beggining here.

#31

I love the Rockwell idea but I’d prefer a rockwell style challenge than just copying a rockwell picture

#32

a rockwell style challenge would be interesting, i have a good idea of what i would do.

intervain, what are the characteristics that you would define as his style?

#33

yeah a good question - after giving it some thought I came to a conclusion that for a strictly modeling challenge it’s not such a good idea to do the style thing, because the characteristics are in the colour palette, composition and stuff that’s achievable with texturing and rendering really… well a grouping of 1 or a couple of characters with some props to define them and with strong character features is very indicative of Rockwell and Leyendecker [who invented the style actually - and should be given due credit - sorry I had to say it 'cause people give Rockwell too much of it!] but yeah I guess for a modeling challenge just recreating his characters makes more sense…

#34

well composition of a scene could still be modeled, for instance you create a diorama so your composition retains a viewing angle, but it can also be opened for full 3d viewing perhaps.
and to me rockwell is about taking a certain concept, simplifying it(vital essence little gelfling), adding some sugar, and obsessive detailing through photo reference, lol. these things can be modeled without colors and texture, its about posing, detailing, and storytelling right? honestly i’ve never been a fan of rockwell, he is a amazing painter but does nothing for me, leyendecker on the other hand i love.

#35

Wow! Thanks for the edjumukation.

I have always loved Rockwell’s work, especially his middle years, but I have to admit that I have remained pretty ignorant about Leyendecker. Now that you have put the spotlight on him I can see that Leyendecker certainly was the major influence behind most of Rockwell’s work and what a prolific artist he was! Much of Rockwell’s work appears to be a complete mimicry of Leyendecker’s. Just look at this great collection of Saturday Evening Post covers:

#36

precisely - thing is Layendecker’s covers have much more life in them IMO and there’s much more creativity in them as well, his New Year’s covers make me giggle every time - I’d recommed this book that came out lately.
It’s full of treasures
I still love some of Rockwell’s work and I think his use of photography’s great - he didn’t just copy it blindly, he interpreted it. He definitely deserves appreciation, but I think so does Layendecker who has been swept under the carpet far too often

#37

A rockwell challenge:love:. That guys got so much art its hard to keep track of it all. Layendecker’s work I felt is more disney or tom and jerry-esque. In that its very animated. More so than rockwells. Still. I do like them both :arteest:.

#38

yeah why not combine both - so there’s more choice - I know there’s stuff in both portfolios that I’d love to choose from ehhe

#39

haha. So true.

#40

Have you ever had a favorite actor that you’ve seen over and over again but never bothered to find out his name? This sort of reminds me of that because I’m very familar with Leyendecker’s work but this is the first I’ve heard of his name. Can’t say if I like either one better. The style from both is so endearing.

I’ve got to find a bigger version of this Rockwell, “Miss Liberty”.
