Next Book on the path to game programming?

#1

OK i can’t say that i’m close to finishing “Teach yourself C++ in 21 days” but i would like to hear somesuggestions on what to buy next:
A library/STL reference book or windows programming?
Do you know any (very) good books on either subject?

IMHO opinion the next natural progression would be to start applying your new skills in a “small” project form. I would suggest starting with the book “Focus on 2D in 3D”, this book will get your feet wet with DirectX and get you on your way to start making 2D games while allowing you to hone your C++ skills.

Secondly, its way too early to start looking at STL…you need to have an extensive background in C++ to not only grasp it but to see way its even necessary, its not for the faint at heart…but you will get there.

So for now, In regards to supplementing C++ just get the Desktop Reference I listed below and that will help you immensely, trust me.

The key here is not to subject your self to overkill but just take small steps…that way you wont have to take 3 steps back every time you get into a jam.

Get a good grasp on Direct X

OK my next book is decided thanks for the help i am getting the complete reference for now!!

But anyway what i really want to do in the end is program game AI. Will that require knowldge of DX and OpenGL?

Re: Barbas.

Hi, there.

I’m going to second “Kid Mesh” on trying to run before you can walk…

I would spend a good year learning C++ - its the best thing you could do right now. I tried rushing to the graphics stuff before becoming aqauinted with my complier etc and come to some very nasty dead-ends…

Still, you seem to be a sensible person - I think you’ll do just fine.

BTW, try to concentrate on “Trigonomentry”, “Calcus” and at atleast “Matrix” math…do roughly 15 minutes a night and you’ll find game physics and collision a simple task…

Well in Greece we do some advanced math early up from highschool so i think i already have a basic idea of what you are talking about, but i guess i should work on them more; it definetly couldn’t hurt anyway!
Thanks for the info!

Re: Barbas.

What!?? You’re supposed to say, “Screw that - I’ll join the army instead! Maths is just plain scary!”

I think you’ll be alright where the maths is concerned…
