Hi, first, I would recommend you to take a look over the forum, there’s a lot of tutorials. Maybe you can start with “Joan of Arc” tutorial, or if you like splines, the Angelina Jolie’s head tutorial. You can find some link here on cgtalk, just use the search button

Well in my current studying I’ve come a across a few tut’s and it seems to be artist preference on what tools to model. The question is what are you most familiar with as far as modeling, sub-division, Patch or surface tools? which ever one your best with will be easier to get the hang of it. I’ve tried a few of the tuts and have decided that I’ll use a mix of the different styles to create my characters, box and single poly. it also helps if you have a good set of images to follow. one profile, one front, one top. this is for the head. i’ll box model the rest and just use front and side.

I agree with plague lord. "Joan of arc’ tutorial at www.3dtotal.com is the best technique for a beginner that i could think of. I started off with that. But its not THAT elaborate for a beginner. You have to know your tools. hey … it wont be any fun if its easy… rite ?

Good luck.
