Hello. I come from Wings3D world with UV Mapper, and found Modo a few days ago by mistake. While found by mistake, The software is really amazing. I tried to work with other, but nothing with Modo abilities, specially the Painting Part (thats what got me hooked).

I wanted to ask a question if you guys dont mind. In the last few days I picked this new owesome software up, I was able to figure out quite a bit of the UV Mapping and Painting portion on the software. And I really really love it. been paiting my new swords and shields ALL NIGHT LONG LAST NIGHT, lol, I couldnt let it go, lol, just loved it.

But, I still do the mesh/model in Wings3D. I wanted to start doing this in the new software. While its still in Demo Mode, I am able to do much even for a demo, and tried to do the sword in Modo, but with no success. I was trying to cut into pieces a cube, so I can narrow it on the bottom part, but tried with no success. Now I downloaded the huge videos thats shows much of the program, but I need the more basics stuff, like cuts, how to make basic meshes. I am very aware of the ways around a 3D Program, as I work with Wings3D for quite a while now.

This is what I am talkin bout: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/tutorial/index.php?tutorial_id=298

That tutorial, the first 23 pages is what really got me hooked on Wings3D. It really showed EVERY Command possible (at that time) in wings3D, and that showed me how to do the basics.

Does anyone knows of a place/or has a tutorial such as the link above, but for Modo? I really want to learn this new software, and I have only 27 days left, lol. I guess this is my NEW YEAR RESOLUTION, to learn my new Modo software.

And second question please, how do I make the displacemnt/bump map for the figure/object? I have this sword and wanted to make a displacemnt map for it, and found a video on Modo site, but still was a bit confusing.

Thank You all and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

To the programmers (that painting part of Modo is REALLY AMAZING, just cant let it go). I would probably buy it just for that.

Happy New year !

If the displacement video wasn’t clear, here’s a short walkthrough from scratch:

  • Open Modo, and set the view best to Render Tri mode instead of Model Single (a tab near the middle of the viewport)
  • Go to Modo Tools and draw a basic shape
  • Make sure the object is being rendered in the preview by changing the big lower viewport to Camera (top left corner) and pushing Shift A to get the object in full view.
  • In Modo Tools, choose Paint instead of Basic.
  • In the top left corner click Add blank image texture, choose a format and name it to your liking.
  • Click one of the drawing tools like Airbrush and draw some lines on the object.
  • Change from Toolbar (upper left corner) to Render Settings by clicking the tab.
  • Click on the triangle before Render an look for your image texture.
  • Right-click on the Effect column of the texture and choose Displacement instead of Diffuse Colour: behold …
  • One more thing: click on Render to make the Render properties appear in the lower left.
  • Click on the Settings tab instead of Frame.
  • You’ll notice in the lower left settings Displacement rate and Minimum Edge Length: play around to see what they do. Enjoy.

If you want to add your own texture, just drag it from your OS Explorer (I’m on Windows) to the Item column on the upper right. You’ll notice that the texture you added is also present in this Item List.

Hope this helps you on your way.

Thank you both. That link is great. I finally figured out the bump displacement and specular maps. Much appreciate it.

Now on to learn more modeling. If anyone else has a great tutorial for newbies (how to make an arch, how to make a house, how to make a column), etc etc, would be appreciate it to get me going with this.

Thank You again.

HAPPY NEW YEAR. (still a bit drunk here, lol).
