Newbie: Cel-Shading plugin?

#1

I’ve never coded a plugin before, and I’ve been rather excited by the possibility of writing a little cel shader for myself, but I’m not sure how to best integrate this shader so that it can be used by non-programmers to help create an animation.

If I understand correctly, plugins for 3DS Max and the like are more aimed towards modifying the 3D data of the models to be rendered, but can they also be used to modify how the rendering is actually done?

And what’s the correct spelling? Seriously, you can google both “cell shading” and “cel shading” and find things.

Thanks.

I never tried it myself, but I know that for Maya and 3DS you can write shaders in Cg and have them display within the modeling program, by using nVidia’s 3DS or Maya Cg plugin respectively. From nVidia’s homepage:

The 3ds max Cg Plug-in allows artists to author and visualize content in 3ds max 5 using advanced hardware rendering and the Cg high level language. Accessible from the Viewport Manager located within the 3ds max Material Editor, DirectX users gain a custom, intuitive GUI featuring real-time effects with sliders and other artist-friendly interfaces.

I never tried it but it seems like a good idea, if you’re alright with using Cg.
