new to after effects:which rendering codec for a dvd ?

#1

First, Hi,
I’m really new to after effects. However, the little I know about it saved me an enormous amount of time, and allowed me to achieve things i couldn’t have if straight from my 3d software. it is really a fantastic soft, and i’m already asking myself how i can have worked without it for such a long time.

So,

I rendered many sequences as tiff. and I nearly finished my project. now is the time to render it. The client wants a DVD. I rendered everything from my 3d software in 1280720, and the parameters of all the compositions inside my composition are 1280720 at 25 images/s, square pixels. I JUST SIMPLY DON’t KNOW which rendering option i should use (codec, compression, etc…)(quicktime, h.264, h.264 bluray, mpeg2 dvd,…)
if someone could give me some help, that would be very kind

Thanks

DVDs are encoded using the MPEG-2 codec, generally with a bitrate < 7Mbps.

However, note that if you want to be able to play it on a regular DVD-player, you’ll need to scale your film down to 720x576 (PAL).

Thank you.

do you really mean the hours I spent to wait for the 1280*720 images to render are useless if I want to put my film on a DVD ?

so to summarize. is there a way to keep my resolution to 1280720 for a DVD and if yes, what are the conditions (special DVD player?), and what format should I use (mpeg2 doesn’t want my 1280720). if I can’t play it on a DVD, what are the options of delivering to the client in order to keep the high res anim ?

Sorry if my questions are so basic, and thanks for your time.

i can render my anim at 1280*720 using the H.264 Blu-ray. the resulting footage won’t be burnable on a dvd, right ?

it seems the step i thought would be the easier will in fact be the most problematic.

Hi problems, i’m coming.

If you want to play it on a standard DVD player on a regular TV you must stick to SD resolution. 720x576 is all PAL SD offers. There really is no work-around if you want to make sure it works.

Sure, you can burn an HD .mpg file to a DVD, but it won’t play on a DVD player.

1280x720 (720p) is an HD format and as such requires a Blu-ray player and an HD television.

ok, thank you very much.

Now, if i forget the idea of being viewable on a tv, and that i stick to a computer viewing, which format would be the most appropriate ? any on will fit if the correct codec is installed on the viewing machine, right ?

For viewing on the computer I usually stick to QuickTime h.264 because the quality is great and you can be reasonably sure it’s installed on most computers.

And if it isn’t, it’s a download from Apple which is a reputable company unlike some other sources of codecs that might be used.

thanks to you.
everything seems to work fine for the moment. I have some lag issues when playing the file. I’ll tweak a bit b4 asking some other questions.
