New layer forced, need help. (Painter X)

Howdy people of great knowledge…

I have an issue that I’ve had for a while and it probably is a very simple explanation and/or a solution to it.

Short description of issue.

[ol]
[li]I’m drawing with ink pen on layer 1 (liquid ink layer) to create an outline (line art)
[/li][li]I just finished, now I create a different layer (#2) to be used as the coloring (fill in layer)
[/li][li]I move layer 2 underneath layer 1
[/li][li]I select layer 1, use the magic wand to select an area on Layer 1
[/li][li]I select underlying layer 2 and do a “fill” with the paint bucket.
[/li][li]Great- now I want to use the ink to paint on layer 2 (to fill in what paint bucket missed)
[/li][li]Instead of letting me paint on layer 2- Painter creates a new layer (layer 3) on top…
[/li][/ol]
My problem is that I would like to go back to layer 2 and continue using the ink pen but I am never able to. If I continue like this, i soon have 5-6 layers when i really want just one for lineart and one for coloring.

I use photoshop and thats how I am reasoning- it always work for me there.
Painter is different, more lifelike in the way it acts…

What do I misunderstand? Is there something i can do?

I would greatly take your thought on this…

using the inking tools (liquid inks) on regular layers creates a new layer.

If you need to use the liquid ink tools on your coloring layers, you’d have create a new liquid ink layer in step two. Then, after getting your selection with the magic wand, use a colored liquid ink brush on the new liquid ink layer. It’s a lot slower than the fill tool, but it will retain the ink information you need.

Also, be sure to adjust your brush feature, size, and volumes accordingly to help your brushes’ performance. And, it won’t hurt to look up John Derry’s Hot-Rodding Corel® Painter brushes pdf. It is a true piece of useful information.
