New build with i7-3930 and ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE

Hello all,

I am about to put together a new pc, I have the following allready:

i7-3930K
ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE
WD Hi 3,5" 1TB Caviar Black Sat
Cosmos2 case

I will mainly be using C4D, Photoshop, After effects7.
Since I still have a license for 3d-coat V3, I might be using that also (maybe upgrading to the newer version 4) although since I didn’t dive into cinemas new sculpting tools yet, the advantages off 3d-coat over C4D is not clear to me. Anyone who want to shed some light on this subject is more then welcome.

What I am considering to ad to this is:
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro M II - 720 Watt - ATX
SDD: Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" SATA600
Cooling: Corsair hydro H100 or the new H110
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit

And then my main concern is the graphics card; I read somewhere in this forum that the nvidia gtx 680 is crippled and that the older gtx 580 would be the better choice.
But now with the new gtx-780 out, I am wondering what would be the better option?

Any insight on any on this would be very much appreciated, thank in advance.

MB is wrong choice, you have to go with 20II soecket mobos

anyway 3930K is still best money/ performance value, and it will be for next few years…sadly…

GFX>>> even GTX580 is still good choice, and I think you would not benefit too much in 680/780 in OpenGL for C4D. for AE 680 is better choice

O silly, just bought this guy, hopefully I can return it.
So its the P9X79 Pro that I need then, I will check what advantages the pro version has over the standard one.

You do not need yo buy any overpriced X79 mobi, until you wish ofcourse… but, on the whole price of the rig it is not too much extra money.
Tha main adventage of X79 mobos, is ability to use 8x8GB of RAM, and overall system stability.

Since you’re already working with Intel processors, you should check out pairing with an Intel SSD. I’d say an Intel SSD 710 for your build. Intel parts are optimized to get the most performance out of each other.

Thanks a lot for your advice, i will look into this.
Do you really think it makes a big difference with the Samsung? Not sure how big a SSD I need. Do people divide their software between the SSD en harddisk, i mean, I could put windows on it and my main programs, then put the software that I Don’t use so intensively on the regular hard-drive, or will this not be a good solution?
Also I was looking for a Graphics card and found some EVGA GTX 580 FTW Hydro Copper 2’s.
I guess I will be fine with one of those, or are there important differences between the brands that I should consider?

The Intel 710 series SSDs are server-grade and extremely expensive. Samsung consumer SSDs consistently lead the competition when it comes to overall performance and reliability, as well as value. They make all parts themselves unlike most other manufacturers who buy in components from other companies such as the processor. As a happy user of a Samsung SSD for over a year I can attest that it works very well with Intel processors.

Intel used to lead in reliability. They have long coped out and Samsung 840 pro now has the uncontested lead in the consumer market on all fronts for 256 and up. Only 128 is challenged by OCZ

Palit is normally a low price, high fault rate brand.
At the same price a gainward without a doubt.

They seem over-priced to me though, even for new. If you plan on buying on ebay anyway I would consider a second hand, reputable/durable brand one.

I liked the gainward for its looks and also that card seems to be quiet.

Why dont you simple get GTX660 2GB?
It is about 200€+ in EU.
No TI version just base model, it is be quite good enough for modeling and etc and it is cool!

Gainward, from what I hear, is fine.
I was just saying for the price listed there you might be better off buying second hand as long as it’s a reputable/robust brand (Gainward would probably qualify, GB, Asus and EVGA definitely do).

If you want silent, btw, read reviews and note down models. For comparison the reference model Titan and GB’s windforce 6xx (I owned both and can confirm first hand) are whisper quiet. Anything scoring the same numbers in noise levels will be silent.

Don’t go by looks to evaluate noise, read reviews that measured it properly.

@Zdravko, it seems that the 5** series performs better then the 6** series for 3d applications.

@Raffaele, makes sense what you are saying, its just that I saw a new Gainward for 300 euro, I thought it was quite allright. Strangely enough I cannot find numbers for it on the noise levels, only that it seems to be quiet. After your suggestion I started looking at the Gigabyte windforce and I found a standard overclocked for 245 euro, its 1,5 Gig.
Does it make sense to look for a 3 Gig version, also does the speed of the card matter that much for 3D? I read that viewport performance also largely depends on the CPU, maybe I’m just making a to big deal out of it.

What app do you use?
It is some kind of gambling, because every new version of app brings diferent OpenGL/D3D/ Nitrous display driver.
I am on GTX660, and it is very well w/MAX 2012.

I’m using C4D R14 mainly, then I intend to pick up my old AE 7 again, or maybe start using CreativeCloud, Photoshop ofcourse.
I actually found a standart overclocked Gigabyte windforce 3 for a reasonable price, it has 1,5 Gb and I actually decided more or less to take it.
But after reading THIS post I started to wonder if I should look for a 3 Gb version.
