Need opinions on this desktop build

#1

Hey, long story short, I realize my current pc is absolutely not up to be animating in Maya. Playing animation in the viewports are really choppy and laggy, and I would definitly not be able to go on with this. Thus, I realized it’s time to move on up. I hitup a friend (he’s a computer/gaming geek) and asked him to help me build a desktop.

I personally have very limited knowledge to most of this stuff, and would say I’m pretty laughable. Anyways, after having me answer some questions about how much RAM, how big do I want this, we came up with the following. He told me it’s just about the same as his set-up (which from what I’ve seen, is pretty great with games) I however won’t really be using it for games, and pretty much just want to focus on animation/3d-related tasks. And the build (from what I can tell with my limited knowledge) seem alot like it’s meant for gaming, so I question how well it would work in Maya. (I won’t necessarily be rendering, however if it’s got the power, that’s definitely a plus. )

For a desktop which he refered to as ‘fairly bad-ass’ I would be almost shocked to find out it’s not so great for what I’d like to do, but I just wanted some reassurance before I go and buy these parts.

So, basically he gave me links to Amazon, asking me the occassional question about how much ram, what cpu, etc. And the result was this : (I apologize if this is the worst/strangest format to post these things, but hopefully it’ll get the picture across)

I’d pass on the SSD and get a better monitor with the difference.

It’s not a bad config.
For rig/anim viewport performance few cores high speed is usually the best bang for buck, so grabbing an i5 and clocking the hell out of it is good sense.

The ram clock is overkill. ivy bridge is perfectly content with 1866 Mhz, get cheaper sticks at 1866 with a lower CAS.

Kingston SSDs are meh.
If you want 128GB OCZ is considered the best performance and bang for buck. 128 can get tight if you start installing games or run active projects off it though, if you decide to go for 256, then Samsung 840 and 840 pro are the par.

The power supply is also overkill. Save a few bucks and buy a decent 700-750w (personally silence and fan regulator beat all other parameters in a PSU for me), that’s already plenty to feed that setup and a number of additional drives.

The motherboard has a decent wi-fi chipset on board, no need to buy an additional one.

For the monitor I’d hunt for a 1920x1200 personally. 1080p isn’t QUITE the sweet spot, especially if you’ll work a lot in a 16:9 + safe area viewport.
