Need opinion about gnomon matte painting tutorials

#1

Considering buying dylans intro to cityscape and his advanced matte painting tutorials. Also thinking about getting dussos matte painting fundamental tutorial.

What I want to know is, how do the dusso tutorial compare to the dylan cole tutorials? do both guys explain and teach well? or am I wasting my money?

I can’t honestly recommend the Dusso dvds. He’s an extremely talented person but Dylan’s dvds are laid out better. Dylan went to the forums and got feedback from users on what they’d like to see. He’s an excellent teacher and explains what he’s doing and why he’s doing it. I’ve got Vol1 and Vol3 and will be getting Vol2 when Gnomon publishes some more by Neville Page

I’m not even into matte painting but I wanted to see how I could add some more realism into my environments. You will learn a lot from Vol1 and Vol3, how to use curves for color correction and how to create mattes to extract clouds and other things from stock photos.

I highly recommend them.

This is probably most unhelpful, as I haven’t seen the DVDs, but I have seen Dylan demo in real life. He was personable, thorough, meticulous, not to mention extremely talented. He detaileded everything he was doing… And this was in a live setting where stuff happens and people interrupt. I can’t help but imagine that in the more controlled environmet of a DVD recording session, it would be really good… As the above two posts attest to.

hey guys

i was curious about these dvds from Gnomon.
Reason being… I just finished a fine arts degree in painting - im a traditional landscape artist (photorealism and also very painterly impressionism sytles).

Im seeking to find a school who can teach me how to turn my passion for landscape painting into 3d animation of backgrounds. i believe its called Digital Background Painting. Anyway i came acroos this other titlle of “Matte Painting” on here.

Im looking at Gnonom and the DAVE schol (got in!). Could you guys who do background or this “matte… ?” painting tell me more of yourself… like your background and your ambitions. And have youguys taken any formal training or just using the DVD"S?

Thanksss

radha — i suggeest you start your own thread it is kinda rude to divert this thread from the original posters question.

I own almost every gnomon analog dvd . I would suggest the dylan coles also for the simple fact that that guy is a beast. he takes you thought so many drawings it is unbeleivable . I have no intentions of being a mat painter just an illustrator and i used a lot of his technques on my spectacular painting. I think he is also an excellent teacher. The dusso vids are ok. They are more like watching him paint a scene which is educational (if the curser wasnt not visible through half of the drawing so you have no idea what he is doing)

I’ve become interested in matte painting so I thought I’d get a couple of the Dylan Cole DVD’s so I can learn how to do it. They are fantastic. I’ve learnt so much.
